Arrow Changing Engine Air Filter

Hello, brand new to doing small DIY stuff on my '13 335x

I recently purchased this Mann/Cleavite Air Filter on Rock Auto as a replacement

https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...&pt=6192&jsn=1

What I didn't realize is that it came with what I'm assuming is the Cleavite wool looking cover glued on the air filter. Does this stiffle my engine sound at all? A Youtube video I watched recently was saying the M Sport filters don't have this but Rock Auto has this tagged as M Sport

Your engine sound comes out of the tailpipes, not the air filter.

yes, but there is a difference in intake sound on turbo cars changing intake housing/filter etc. there was a thread once about this pre-filter element and it was either just that, a pre-filter, or something having to do with cold weather pkge vehicles. ill say the same thing i said then, many ford diesel truck air filters are pre-filtered as well and our techs have always removed them as they restrict air flow (they can see MAF flow in diag).

Where BMW is concerned if you want to hear turbo noise you either change or modify the intake. For that matter turbo noise is all you'll get from most aftermarket intakes, while many are hot air and performance actually suffers. Performance is barely affected by changing to high flow filters, but engine longevity is.

I fully agree with Billfitz on this one. "Sound" to me is exhaust. Intake sound is not sound - it is noise. Some exhaust setups are also purely noise. But if you want to have "sound" - work on your exhaust, not on your whistle.

But I also appreciate it is a matter of taste, so whatever rocks your boat.

The additional filter element is most likely an activated carbon filter. Emissions related. It is not going to affect your "engine sound", whatever it is you call that.

Thanks all for the insight

Is it a no no to remove the wool filter and just use the air filter? I see it’s just held on by glue

You can do it. But don’t think you will gain anything.
