F30 folding wing mirrors?
I was unable to spec the folding wing mirrors when buying my new car...I was told that the electric mirrors come capable of folding, they just need enabling :!: It surely isnt as simple as that, so what does it take to get the F30 mirrors folding (which parts are required on top of standard electric mirrors) :?:

As above, it's not as simple as enabling them, you would need new new power folding mirrors, wiring and coding, even if you soruce a used set of mirrors I bet you're looking at £1k.

Sounds like you've been told a load of bullshit to me. Did you buy a stock car? ie. one already built and in the country.
If so, then I think a salesman has sold you the car he has, rather than the car you wanted.

Like SkyJawa says, the mechanisms from the electric mirrors and folding mirrors is different and can't be coded, it requires new hardware. A fairly costly retrofit as I understand it.

All the mirrors are capable of folding. If they're not electric folding then you just push them with your hand!
Seriously though, to make them electric folding, you need different mirrors with the motors etc. and wiring loom, mirror switch with button for folding and then coding. This will be several hundred pound notes as the folding mirrors aren't cheap, let alone the other bits. |

Yes, one could argue that several hundred pounds is a lot pay to save using your hand to fold them when you park!

But doesn't the passenger side mirror also only dip on reverse if folding mirrors or electric memory seats are spec'd? I had that on my E92 and it was one thing I used soooo much that getting into cars without it feels wrong!!

You need the wiring because it needs to be canbus wired into the Front Equipment Module. I was slowly going to buy the bits myself - complete s/h power mirrors range from £110 to £200, the 2x dimming mirror glass are around £140, switch about £80 and the wiring maybe £40. However I found a Indy that did it all in for £500 - who is independently employed by BMW dealers to do some of there retrofits. PM me if you want his details - he also does F10s and minis. While he was fitting the mirrors he also told me he does other retrofits including comfort access, active cruise control - all with BMW parts either s/h or new. Edit: you don't need the electric seat for tilt to kerb (dipping), as I understand from by fitter this comes from the FEM module and anyway I haven't got it and dipping works fine. The electro-chromatic (dimming) element however does need the centre rear view mirror with dimming for the wing mirrors to work. Additionally I thought having tinted window would affect the wing mirror capability - it doesn't by much. Last edited by tjlees; 03-13-2015 at 12:23 PM.. Reason: Added bit on dimming and dipping |
