Youtube vids - What do tuning mods do for your car?

If this has been posted before please feel free to suck a lemon.

Car Throttle youtube channel have taken an old 330D and put it up against an M3 to see what various mods do for race lap times. It's actually pretty cool watching the numbers come down

EP1 - Can A BMW E46 330d Keep Up With An E92 M3 On Track?

EP2 - What Difference Do Coilovers Actually Make To Ride And Handling?

EP3 - How Much Difference Do Sticky Tyres Make To Lap Times?

EP4 - How Much Difference Do Upgraded Brakes Make To Track Performance?

EP5 -Do Thicker Anti-Roll Bars And Polybushes Make A Car Faster?

EP6 - How Much Faster Has Chip Tuning Made The 330d?

Looks like an afternoons watching. Cheers.

All a bit pointless though. Obvs this guy is missing the point of tuning:-

Interior CF trim?
Steering wheel with a flat bottom?
Bright pedals?
De badging?
Noisier exhaust?

That 330D would tear the M3 a 5th exhaust with the above on board!

Top gear did a funny piece when they tried and of course failed to modify that Espace to make it much quicker....

Alcantara steering wheels are must though.

Interesting to watch the developments. What I take away is that Tyres and Power make the biggest difference.

It would be good if the last thing he does is get a good instructor to coach him, and see how much that saves him!

I think youve missed the point. Alex is trying to demonstrate that a nobber in a derv hearse can thrash a god-like M car for the price of a cheap hooker and a bag of Columbian marching powder.

Last video now available, and he may or may not have beaten the M3, I won’t spoil it for those that haven’t watched yet, but what I wonder is if for what he’s spent on that 330d could he have bought an E90 M3?

Blimey, a right kill joy.

Its modding and tweaking. Some people buy a cheap base model and want to improve it simply for the sake of doing it. Yes, I'm sure you could get an E90 M3 for the cost thats been spent on the 330D. Would have been a short fucking dull video if thats all they did. Lighten up you teabagging dunder-heed.....

I wouldn't go anywhere near your fanny, let alone shove anything in it.

An enjoyable series indeed.

I used to have an E46 330d tourer, though an auto, and I never thought it was a particularly great handler, so never would have believed it could be made quicker than a proper M3!

I think an LSD may have been helpful to him after the hybrid turbos were added.

I'd also wondered if getting some instruction was going to be one of the "mods", as would have been interesting to see how much difference that made.

Good point about the LSD, the car was really struggling with traction with all that torque, hence why the 335d, M550d etc are xdrive only. Also some tyres better than Nankangs might help.

I think they've said they are doing another series in the car where they're going to do a top speed run, new rubber and they kept on mentioning drifting. I guess they'll be getting an LSD soon.

They could have just bought a pre-sorted used track car but as said that'd be a "lets see if this track prepped car is faster than an m3"... done.

I actually enjoyed seeing the car smoke it on the corners but I'm childish and I know that adversely impacted lap times.

Interesting series, I love stuff like this.

Shows how things move on, the hybrid turbo / remap dyno figures are exactly what I got with my f30 330d with PPK.

In terms of cost I bet it is close. An e46 330d with galactic miles on it must be a couple of grand. E92 M3 is what £16k?

Then there's the satisfaction of matching an M3's times in an old diesel estate.

If you forget about the car and look at the results then it's a good project but most just want a nice car out of the box not an old shed with mods.

Final video now out, total cost was £10k, but they did include the labour, obviously most of us couldn’t fit these parts ourselves so total would probably be close to an E92 M3

I think most jobs could be carried out by a handy DIYer. That was the point surely? They even used facilities such as the self service workshop for lifts and pits.

The cheapest E9X M3 on Autotrader is a 123k miler ropey convertible for a tad under £13k. (There is also an E92 M3 for 10k with 150k miles but the cost of keeping that on the road would be high or the new owner would need to be a keen diy'er. 150k 330D or 150k M3? Which will bankrupt you first??)

I think the videos are aimed at the keen petrol head with a bit of home mech skill. But I guess you may be the type who takes your cars to the dealer to get washer fluid filled?

Lol no mate, I do brakes and suspension myself, but clutches, water pumps and hybrid turbos wouldn't be something i'd do on my driveway.
