Opti-Coat applied. Should I be unhappy?
I have a 2012 Jet Black, 6 month old car. Yesterday I had a guy coming over and applying Opti-Coat. The car is very shiny now BUT i can still clearly see webbing, light scratches and even some swirls.
Before I start yelling, I wanted to ask you guys if this is normal. I will post pics later today. Not happy

It was $450, no glass, no wheels. I'll post pics in a few hrs.

Opticoat is all about prep work first.
I had it done when the car was brand new, 2 months old and he spent the whole day prepping the car and removing any blemishes. Any blemishes that are there before opticoat is applied will still be there under the coating. Not sure what he can do now without removing the Opticoat, fixing the scratch/swirl/blemish then reapplying. |

Sounds like a piss poor job. As F30SD said, it's all about prep. Doesn't sound like this guy did any paint correction if the whole job took only 3 1/2 hours. Any imperfections will be caught under the OC layer. Even if he did correct the paint, he may have applied the coating improperly causing some hazing. Either way, the OC layer needs to be polished off and done again. Sorry

Indeed this is a poor/half job. I'm a car detailing professional and we need at least 8 hours to do it right.
1) Washing 2) Iron.X 3) Claying 4) Scratch removal 5) Medium polishing 6) Finishing polish 7) Degreasing 8) Applying a coat We would charge for labour only $ 480,- and a coat like C.Quartz Finest is an additional $ 300,-. When done like it should be done, your paint should look crystal clear. Something like this: BTW I don't know if there are detailers in the USA that apply C.Quartz Finest, but it is superior to Opti Coat. Last edited by GuiltyNL; 05-24-2013 at 04:00 PM.. |

Yea I hate to say it but you got slightly ripped. My guy spent 9 hours. Wash, clay, polish, and then opticoat. Your paint defects are trapped under the opticoat now. It's all about the prep.

Agree 100%. You need to have the Opti coat removed and prep the car properly. I just did CQuartz on my 2012 335I BSM with 1400 miles on it. Just picked it up as a left over 2 months ago. It took me 2 days of 8 hr days to get the paint right for the Cquartz application. The swirls and light scratches are a bitch to get out and take a lot of time. If he spent 3 1/2 hours with the Opti coat application too, then he did not prep the car properly.

Yup. Sorry man. That's terrible. Those swirls should have been corrected before the OptiCoat was applied.

I'd let him know he needs to fix that and it's unacceptable... otherwise e-sabotage is in order. You don't just get to screw up someone's car like that and allow others to get scammed in the same way.

Yeah ... that's what I thought. He seemed like a really cool guy, maybe he had a bad day, I don't know. I don't want to hurt his business at all, but he needs to do something about this. I will contact him and show him this thread.
But what are my alternatives? Should I ask my money back and go somewhere else or should I have him try again?

Its gonna be a big job to remove those opticoat and redo the surface below the opticoat.
So do u think u can trust him to do the job well? I suggest u look somewhere else. Ask for refund. If he screw up again, u're gonna be in deep sh!t. |

pics do not lie. Proper cutting compound, finish polish and a machine would have taken those light scratches and swirls right out. Because he did not do that, he has now sealed the defects under the Opti Coat. I would not let him have another go at it since he should have seen that himself and instead chose to ignore it and go forward with the Opti coat knowing full well he was going to seal all the defects for good. That IMHO, is not a good businessman or detailer who is deserving of another chance. I would also say, it will not be cheap to fix that mistake. it will be a lot of work to strip the opti coat. He rolled the dice that you would just accept the car the way he did it and he came up snake eyes.
