Great article on the B58 engine
I don't know much about the engine, so found this article very informative.
http://youwheel.com/home/2016/03/27/...linder-engine/ The solid build brings peace of mind for future upgrades/tuning

Yes it's a good article. Thanks for posting it up.
I read that a while back while researching the 340i. Indeed the block design hints at a solid build and reliability, but it's the peripheral bits that worry me slighty, VANOS and chain, including tensioners etc are all at the back. When reading that, it's clear to see its a substantial engine design change from the x35i Having had 2 instances of VANOS problems on previous BMW's (N52 inline 6) when I read about these things being an engine out job, makes me sweat. (although I read somewhre that BMW have produced a special tool to service them on the B58 without the engine out???) Remember the timing chain disaster on the N47? A major issue resulting in a huge recall and it was an engine out to resolve. I sure hope BMW have learned that lesson and whatever they place the rear of the engine, has a shelf life past the expected engine life.

Yep the closed deck design of the block is comforting. Its a peach of an engine and five years in I'm not sure many issues have arisen apart from unexplained coolant loss (something I've suffered after only 10k)
I tend to take a passing interest in this thread https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/fo...play.php?f=663 There are people rinsing the hell out of the B58, however if its good enough for Toyota to stick it in the Supra...well you know |
