Tracking down driveline vibration. What is this noise?

Hi guys,

Ever since my shop installed my M LSD, I've had this vibration under acceleration/cruising/braking starting around 60, and getting worse at various speeds above that (65, 75, etc).

I literally just had new tires put on and everything balanced - so I think those are ruled out. I bought a new guibo but I just don't have the time and patience to pull off the exhaust, heat shields... I'm likely going to have a shop try and track down the root cause and fix it...

Anyway, I took a vid just now while the car was in the air, to see if the vibrations would be visible at the differential. Can anyone tell me what the most likely cause of that high pitch whine is? Diff or center support bearing maybe?

Well if the issue started right after the shop installed the LSD, why didn't you immediately go back to the shop and have them diagnose it?

From the video the main thing that looks off is the metal piece near the diff (dust shield or something?) looks loose/wobbling. Not sure if that's normal. Might be causing noise but unlikely its the vibration.

Yeah, I checked that piece out and it's just a plastic dust shield, so I don't think it's the cause. I do have an appt with the shop next week. I had them check it out shortly after I got the LSD installed, and they said everything was fine.

Now it's starting to become more and more noticeable especially now that I'm doing quite a bit of highway driving for work. Hopefully they will get to the bottom of it this time.

It is difficult to tell because I cannot tell where the sound is coming from. Is the shaft rubbing against a heat shield or clamp closer to the transmission? I don't think sound like that would be coming from inside the LSD unit if it were filled with and oiled properly.

I'm not sure where the noise was coming from exactly... I put my phone under the car while I spun it up, because I was alone and didn't have someone else available to press the gas for me :/

My suspicion is that the center support bearing is making the noise.

Sound aside (which shouldn't really be normal IMO... unless you are still breaking in the LSD?), you shouldnt be getting vibration, especially one that gets worse over time.

The LSD is still relatively new... I will give the shop a chance to sort it out before I go elsewhere and get a 2nd opinion.

If it's like other LSDs, there is probably a break-in procedure (or simply mileage traveled), followed by a fluid change. Maybe look into that.

Did that immediately upon install. My new fluid is motul, so maybe it's just louder.

Think he's referring to the 1500 mile fluid change. Could be wrong but that is what was suggested to me.

Also, the idle figure 8's, idle left hand turns with wheel lock and idle right hand turns with wheel lock. Think i did 30 each to be safe. Added in some larger circles with a little speed (left and right)

Edit: +500 miles without getting on it. Then gradually start amp it up.

Yes, this is what i meant. This procedure, followed my putting some miles on it, then a fresh fluid change. If you are on the fluid you did the break-in on, that could explain some noise.

You replaced the new fluid right at install? If so, are you certain it's the correct fluid WITH friction modifiers?

Sure it is.. NOT. Betcha they botched the install. Sounds like rotation rubbing on sheetmetal. See the clamp in the middle of said illustration? Maybe there is rubbing there or anywhere along with heat shield.

I did the break-in with the shipped fluid, then had the shop change the fluid (somewhere around 1200-1500 miles later) with the same fluid one of the owners is running in his identical car. I believe it's Motul 300 LS.

I've checked the entire driveshaft, nothing is touching or even close.
I will give them a chance to sort this out next week, and get a second opinion if they don't deliver.

check the emergency brake line cable. There is a tab that often brakes and causes the metal tab to bounce off the drive shaft. This happened to me and a few others after LSD install.

I documented that noise/issue here, but OP said he already checked and nothing was hitting the driveshaft

https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1708574

The sound was also WAY louder than in his video, especially given that was taken under the car.

So, after 6 few weeks of putting this off, I dropped the car off at the dealer to have their foreman take a look at this. He says it's the diff. Very upset to hear this opinion...

It's basically impossible to find a replacement now that they're discontinued. Taking it up with the shop that installed it to find a compromise. The vibration has been present since installation and I've had them look at it before, only to be told, "it's normal".
