My recently acquired 430, with the M+ blue 4 pots is squeaking every time I pull it up to stop. It's become incredibly annoying!

I have had this on other cars, and am well versed in how to bed in brakes. I have carried out the procedure twice (10 x medium braking 40 - 20mph, 10 x aggressive braking 60 - 20 mph to the point of almost tripping ABS, then a 15 minute cool down run with zero braking), and each time it has solved the problem for a day or two, then slowly but surely, the squeak returns

I don't get what else could be causing it? Pads look fine, the car has only a little over 20k on the clock and looks/feels very well looked after in general.

What else can I try? As it stands wifey is starting to give me the "You've bought a silly broken car" look. I need to solve this before she loses her patience

I have this currently on my F31 330d. Currently on approx 43k miles and it's been doing it on and off for about last 5000 miles. It sounds like a 20 yr old Vauxhall when I roll up to the lights

It's definitely the front off side and although the garage have checked it twice recently, they reckon there is still a couple of thousand miles or so left in the pads.

I think it's a pretty common problem and there will be other threads on here which discuss it.

This is my problem - I have read the other threads and they all end up with instructions on how to bed in the brakes. That would be my advice if I saw someone else asking.

But I have done that twice, and for the first time on any car, it's not fixing the problem. There has to be another factor here.

Also, from the number of threads and google results, it feels like it may be a particular problem on this generation of BMW's, more than other brands performance brakes.

I can't be bothered to take it back and fourth as I'm pretty sure the garage will just re-bed the brakes, as I have already done twice. There must be something else..

I didn't hang about for long when this problem appeared on my 3 series.

First job was to add Ceratec to the back of the pads. That made no difference.
Second job was to chamfer the edges of the pads. This lasted a short while.
Third was to sand back the lips around the edge of the discs. This actually quietened them down a lot, but I could still hear the noise occasionally.
Fourth was to upgrade the discs to grooved. This fixed it for good as it constantly takes the squeaky glaze off the pads. The only trade off is more brake dust.

I’ve had mine in for squeaky brakes had pads all round changed. 10k miles done and they starting to squeak again...not as bad but it’s coming back

And I assume, faster pad wear?

Ceratec was going to be my next 'fix' but you've dashed those hopes!!

When it starts, all the optimism in the world won't help. It'll just get worse. Have you tried re-bedding the brakes? A lot of people find it's a sure fix, just this time, on my car, it seems not to be so.

Did the 330D have the m sport+ brakes? And did the 335D?

If so I'll get some and give it a go..

Yes both had blue calipers.

Apply plenty to the back of each pad.

Just give them a good spray with a hose pipe, its a build up of brake dust. Mine never squeak and that's all i do.

I've seen a build up of dust in drum brakes cause squeaking, but not on disc brakes...

In any case, brake dust actually between the caliper and disc would be removed most easily just with a couple of firm brake applications. I have already gone way beyond that by re-bedding them twice.

Plenty of brake dust around the rims after bedding mind... It's a messy process.

That's definitely never worked with mine, even taking the brakes apart and properly cleaning them with brake cleaner and wire brushes then greasing the contact points didn't work.

It’s because they’re fixed calipers, they’re not isolated by rubber like floating calipers. I’ve tried different discs and several different types of pads and they always squeal.

Yet... Not all do.

There seem to be some people with the same brakes that either never have a problem, or can fix it by re-bedding.

Then there are people in my position who can't seem to fix it no matter we do!

There must be something that can be identified as the reason some identical cars are permanently effected, others not at all. My friend's 330D saloon has the blue calipers and he has not had a problem in over a years ownership.

It's all about harmonics and the different factors that can affect the exact frequency that causes the calipers to 'ring'. Different manufacturing tolerances, different wheels/tyres, different wheel bolt torque, different use of the brakes (some barely used with motorway use, some in a lot of stop start town traffic, some driven hard, some driven carefully etc) can all affect it.

I remember I put my winter wheels on one year and it completely stopped the squeal for a couple of months. Also newer pads are less prone to squeal.

I might try different pads in the end. To start with my next approach will be to try the anti-squeak stuff - don't hold out much hope but it's a cheap potential fix so might as well try that first.

Any recommendations on what pads to go for if I do swap them? I know some are more prone to squeaking in general than others.

The best ones i’ve had are the current Ferodo DS Performance pads which didn’t squeal at all for the first half of their life. Funnily enough they don’t have shims or chamfers which are features added to the oem pads that are supposed to reduce noise!

Mine are now doing it ALL THE TIME, even after a 3hr run. 20k on the clock and really want the dealer to do something, they are hardly worn fgs.
