Goodbye LED, hello OLED

Was at a tech event today.

Looking at new tech, a bit of which will appear on future BMW's (already with the M4 GTS rear lights).

A number of companies including OSRAM and Philips have adopted OLED tech for cars.

Early adopter will be Audi and BMW.

There are also transparent OLED screens coming out.

These are fully transparent until a signal is sent to them.

If you are in to advertising, this tech is made for shop displays etc.

However, also has application with car displays as well.

Mainly tail lights.

However transparent OLED film on the rear screen would be ideal for shed draggers.

You could see OLED film on A pillars being pretty useful - I presume they could be used to effectively "cloak" the pillar - would need a camera on the outside. Probably technology not quite ready for that yet though.

Don't mind tech being there to aid driving experience. Hate it being used for bling (unless you can turn it off). Sadly, BMW are going to have to go that way as people these days seems to only buy stuff if it "looks cool", and sod the usability. Good examples are Audi's distracting multi display console and stupid touch screens replacing tactile buttons.

Did read something in auto express some time ago where by wearing special glasses linked to surround view made the panels see through to aid parking and all round visibility.

Basically think of transparent monitor as you rear glass or even windscreen.

Also gives great options for full dash displays.
