What no one has mentioned is that BMW has also brought back the ability to transfer CPO from private owner to private owner for $200:

Huh? I don't think that ever went away, only the ability to transfer the free maintenance plan, correct?

I recall when they introduced the CPO Elite a few years ago, they also made it so CPO was only transferable if transaction was made through BMW dealer.

They had taken away the private-to-private transfer option, which is now back.

Here's an old thread on the topic.
Quote:
New, as of January 1, 2014, the BMW Certified Pre-Owned Protection Plan and the BMW Certified Pre-Owned Elite Protection Plan are not transferable from the original pre-owned vehicle owner or lessee to each subsequent owner or lessee unless the subsequent retail has been performed by an authorized BMW Center.

It is also a bit tricky for drivers with high annual mileage, e.g. 25k. So the 1-yr/unlimited can cover from 50k to 75k in year 5, but the remaining 7-yr/100k only has 25k miles left year 6 and 7, right?

My two options were:
1) keep the 1 yr/unlimited or
2) buy the warranty to add a couple more years of coverage to that 1 year for total of 3 years cpo warranty.

The warranty ends when 84 months/100,000 miles are reached. In my case, I have low miles (22k miles) so the 100,000 miles or the unlimited miles would not matter to me, unless of course I drive 20k+ miles a year in my case, which I doubt since I have a second car. So, again I felt I should buy and extend the cpo warranty.

Glad I got my CPO with the extra 2yr/50K. Really, that was the selling point, I had 4 years and 70K miles to enjoy the car relatively worry free. I guess I'll have to consider my options in 5 years or so.

I'm sure this just means that they will make the car more reliable going forward

I’m Curious to know how much they charged you for the extra 2 years.
And perhaps you recall how much they wanted for one year?
Thanks!

Don't see my next car as BMW

Now that BMW has reduced length of extended coverage on CPO models and recently receiving a weak Timing chain warranty ext. I will probably buy anther brand as I don't see BMW commitment to quality. I drive 20,000 miles a year and usually buy CPO cars as I don't want to take depreciation hit on a new car.

Yes, BMW just payed out a huge settlement worth a half billion. Increasing margins is on their minds

Will this drive everyone back to Audi? CPO S4 now seems like a bigger competitor?

Most dealerships sell aftermarket warranties. Mine told me they'd sell me one when my CPO warranty expired, the warranty guy actually called me to remind me about it. For me, as long as the drivetrain is covered, I can fix the small things myself or with the help of my indy mechanic if special tooling is required. My co-worker bought an older X5 from what I think was a Toyota Dealer, the aftermarket warranty they sold him covered replacement of the differential, valve guides, and coolant crossover 100% so far. I'm not too sure about the wheel bearings though, maybe he had to pay for those. As a matter of fact, when the differential went out the warranty company sent out a "special inspector" to make absolutely sure the diff was bad. They still had to eat it.

My point is, buy the car that makes you happy. You can get a warranty if you do a little research.

Audi has a very comprehensive 2 year warranty. I know since I am cross shopping S4s. The only negative is that there is a deductable of $85.

The other thing that stinks with BMW reducing their CPO warranty to 1 year is that I haven't seen a corresponding drop in asking price. I've been tracking CPO 335s for a while and I haven't seen the prices change. So much for the "making the cars more price competitive" argument!

I got a loaded 340 with under 3000 miles on it. It stickered at 65900 and I got it for 42000 certified. Substantial savings going CPO

CPO is over-rated..coverage is limited pretty much to drive train issues and then there are exclusions even there....It's a great marketing tool but after going that route, I'd negotiate even harder if I were doing it a 2nd time.

New is easier (albeit NOT cheaper)...you drive it and not worry about it for 3/4 yrs...
