Seeking some opinions and/or advice.
I've had my e90 M3 for about 5 years now and think I'm ready for a new project. Mainly something faster. I'm drawn to the B58 engine because if the tremendous power capabilities. Wondering how the F30's handle in comparison to the older M3's if anyone has any seat time behind both cars? How does the F30 handle the track with a good set of coilovers? Plans for the 340 if I buy it would be: Daw Flowmax 2.5 (or Pure 800) Dorch Stage 2 HPFP Catless downpipe (likely VRSF) Ohlins R&T or KW V3 coilovers Arc-8s

Coming from an E90 ///M3 I’m not sure an F30 will satisfy you handling-wise. Is there a reason you aren’t considering an F80 ///M3?

I'm by no means an experienced track racer but would take the car through the mountains on spirited drives on weekends and maybe 1-2 track days a year. The cheaper f30 leaves me way more room for mods to the engine. Probably around 8k is what I could budget for mods. I would be diying every install too.

My 340i with adaptive suspension (thp) + dinan springs, bumps, and shockware strut tune handles pretty damn well.
Also added sealed monoballs on both upper and lower control arms. Handles very good for a sedan IMO Try to get one with the track pack (thp). The VSS also makes the steering a bit heavier and feels more similar to the hydraulic of the e9x. |

Going from ANY M to any non-M will be blah...
I made a mistake of going from the F80 to G20 M340i, and got bored after 3-4 months, finally jumped out of the lease after 9 months. Fast, yes, totally sterile and uneventful car. Before the F80, I've had the F30 335i (so N55 instead of the N58). The N58 would have made it faster and that is about it. Otherwise, F80 vs F30 -- day and night. Don't think I will ever go back to a non-M BMW. |

Sounds like I'd be best to go ahead and get an F80 and throw some fat tires on the back to at-least try and mimic what X drive achieves with traction. Keeping the "M like" handling and rawness is important to me and I'd likely miss it stepping out of an M car.

But if it's good coilovers kit and some combination of suspension components I'd be curious what all it would take.

There's a lot of options to get f30 very competitive, everything from the f80 can bolt up to the f30, including rear subframe, common is f80 front control arms and tension struts, gives you camber and caster and really helps front grip, and you have many options for rear end, I wouldn't swap to f80 rear subframe, just aftermarket f30, you're not losing anything but track width honestly

I had a F30 2014 335i for 4 years and drove it to 145k miles. Traded it in and got a F80 m3 last February. It's night and day between the two. You can make a b58 really fast, but it will never feel like a real M car or give you that engaging drive. e90 m3 to f30 would be a downgrade in my opinion.
Also, the whole crankhub issue is blown out of proportion |

As much as I loved my F30's they are not M cars and I think you are going to be disappointed. I went from a fully loaded 340i M Sport with the Track Package to a base F80 and it was like night and day on two different planets. The amount of money and work to get an F30 to feel like an F80 isn't worth it. You might as well pick up an F80 at that point. There is still plenty of options for modding the F80, but you start at a higher base level and you have a higher ceiling than an F30.
On the other hand, a nice 340i with just a few mods will still bring a smile to your face for a more reasonable amount of money, it won't be the same, but it will be pretty close in the $/smiles department. If I were you though, I'd hang on to that E90 if it's in good shape. I think they will be future classics. Also, the F80 crank hub issue is blown out of proportion.

If you don't need four doors go for the F82. Lower center of gravity helps with the handling. You might want to read this: https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=868647 If it applies to the non M, the M will also benefit from the differences.

Can't help you with comparing the two cars but if you have the money to get F80 I would, F30 is cheaper and you will have some money left for upgrades but in future once you spend all that money on F30 can you get it back when selling?

The f80 will undoubtedly take a lesser hit on depreciation than the f30. So I'll be spending more initially but down the road when I sell the car I'll likely make that money back if the car stays in pristine condition which it will under my OCD ownership. For example, I bought my E90 for 22k 4-5 years ago and have add 50k miles on the odometer and had it listed for 23k and had 3 cash offers within a week before pulling it off the market because I'll need to save a bit more to get a F80 with a downpayment that works for my young (and growing) family. Would love to keep an e90 and f80 M for the best of both worlds in terms of M cars but not sure I can swing 2 cars right now.

Would it though? Whenever I looked at a M car in Canada, it's $30k+ more than a 3-series (top power level) (IE $60k vs $95k). I just don't know that saying it has less depreciation is a true statement.

He's talking about used, I think you are looking at new cars right? Most M cars reach a point where they stabilize, which is a bit higher than non-M cars.
