The section that has the M logo on the bottom is trimmed in the same material as the steering wheel - or very similar. There is a definite improvement in quality because I hated the scratchy plastic on the M Sport wheel. The silver centre section isn't made of the same cheap plastic either. It looks different and if you touch it on a cold morning, it's definitely metal.

Minor details, irrelevant to some but I think it makes a difference.

Agreed. It’s definitely metal, and considerably heavier than the standard plastic one.
