Exactly, and why bother, as anyone who knows their BMWs will know straightaway that it isn't a 340i from the exhaust config... Sad

I guess he had it remapped so it's almost standard 340i performance at legal speeds now so decided to be a cock and stick the 340i badge on. I guess it will fool people who don't have a clue and make him look completely stupid to people like us .. who know! Maybe he's getting the exhaust changed next hehe

Thought he would have at least put a M Badge on it at least be a proper wanker

That's really pretty pathetic.

A 330i is nothing to be ashamed of, so why do it

Did you know that the 320i and the 330i is exactly the same engine. And I do mean exactly...not bigger pistons or anything. They just have different BHP but the price difference is quite a bit.

Nothing wrong with the B48 engine, I have a 320i.

Yep, and it also goes in the 225i, the X1 28i and the 740e.

And the 318i is 1.5L.

Bit complicated compared with the good old days when the model number was just series plus engine size!

Think we all agree the 4pot petrols are very good so why hide it?

I had a 218d coupe courtesy car the other day and thought "this goes well for a 318" When I checked it out it was a 2.0L....so even the 318''s aren't the same size.

Got to love the 335/340 snobbery on this forum. Very entertaining.

Had someone in front of me with the "new" M335d.....

...and the funny bit was the oversize M badge, which was at least 1.5 times taller than the 335d lettering...

The thing is, most people won't know the difference. I could drive around in a the most basic BMW (debadged) and the huge majority wouldn't know the difference. They wouldn't even realise when they hear it start because, they just don't know the difference. It's a bit like people who can't tell the difference between a sound system and a 'sound system'.

We could all save a fortune and get debadged base models

Fair point, but I didn't get my car to impress strangers. I got it for me. The only people who notice are petrolheads who want a race and I'm far too old for that (please take note nobhead in the RS5 this afternoon ).

That surely depends on your motive for buying the more expensive model!

I want the performance the larger engine offers but my car is debadged because I also prefer something understated; if someone thinks it's a 320d I frankly couldn't care less and in actual fact I welcome it if it means boy racers leave me alone at traffic lights!

Given the above about the last thing I'd ever think of doing is putting a 340i badge on a lesser model. However, clearly some people do and I can only assume they do that in order to try to portray a certain image to the wider world; it's a free country and obviously up to them but not for me I'm afraid.

Yes, I left myself open there... it was actually said tongue-in-cheek. You are both absolutely right though, the car is for my pleasure alone, otherwise, knowing that most people don't know the difference, I would have bought a debadged 318 Touring and not added over £10k of options to a 335. I'd have to be like the others to save a fortune, and then be happy with my choice.
