OP here.

So...since I had 2 brake scares in last 3 weeks or so, I called BMW service to schedule an appointment.
Straight to voicemail. No callback. Called again, nothing. Finally, called me back at the end of the day on Saturday.
Me: Have a brake issue
SA: Is it intermittent?
Me: Yes
SA: Hard to replicate. We are booked for next 2 weeks (no loaners).
Me: Have you heard of any F30 brake issues before?
SA: Absolutely NOT.

Today (Monday)
Voicemail: MR e90im, please call us at your earliest convenience so that we can get you in for that brake check. We'd like to look at it ASAP.

Scheduled appointment for this week. Will report back.

Update: Stopped by the dealer in Indy today to see how the fix was coming. Still waiting on the vacuum pump to arrive. 8 days in the shop now and still not driving the vehicle. The dealership has been amazing though! Put me into a 535xi loaner as a plus. Great people there!
Someone from the NHTSB emailed me today to ask some questions about the safety issue as well. Have a call planned for tomorrow. He seemed really interested in what I have to say. It's a mass produced vehicle, things happen, but their response to this has been very acceptable. Might not be so pleasant if 30 days later, I am still without my car. haha

Good point. Maybe the right hand drive version is ok since we have not heard any similar events from Australia, HK etc. Let's hope it is the case

Probably OZ & rest of world

Saw this article: http://editorial.autos.msn.com/blogs...5-576ca23b2a7b

Indicates 176K cars worldwide (76K US), so if true everyone's involved.

I'm from Vancouver and just recently purchased a 2013 328xi. I believe it's the 2013 May production and i'm experiencing a really soft brake on the vehicle. I brought the car back to the dealership the next day and they told me the car needs some time for the brake pad to embed into the brake disc?? Not really sure what it means but this is definitely not the brake I had exp. on the demo car. I'm thinking of bringing the car back again this week and advised them about the thread that I saw on this form. Let me know if you have any other exp. !!

Cat is out of the bag now. It's a known issue.

Update:

Left the car at the dealership yesterday. Got the loaner, base 328. Brake pedal is much softer and brakes are grabbier than my sport line. We'll see what they'll say next week.
What pisses me off is that I put 8k miles on the car with crappy brakes, thinking that dust free pads/ smaller rotors are to blame.

Well, isn't this interesting. I pitched a real bitch about this when they had a recall back in 2013 and they repeatedly told me there was no problem with my vehicle. Supposedly, there weren't that many cars impacted by the problem.

Given this problem is an EXACT duplicate of what transpired back in 2010, I wasn't particularly comfortable with their reassurances (think GM hiding their problem for YEARS). So, now here we go again.

Note, I thoroughly expect some of the "brain-washed" crowd to defend this to the end on behalf of BMW and so to them I say, save your breath.

Check your VIN to be sure your car is affected. I'm clear.

Don't get too comfortable with that process/result.

The Fix: BMW will begin notifying owners late this month, and dealers will install a locking ring in the camshaft to retain the camshaft seal disk in the proper location for free. This latest action is an expansion of a recall from earlier this year.
I don't think they have "notified" anyone yet. They had this problem in 2010 and again a YEAR AGO but yet here we are again - same problem, different day - GM comes to mind.

I read the documents. It's an expansion of the recall from last year. Many of us, including me, have already had the fix done under the main recall.

Hi all, the exact issue happened to me on a brand new 2014 328i.
Same engine model as recall but manufacture date in munich a few months after date range of recall. Depressing brake firmly it was rock hard and lost power to the brakes. Car rolled forward despite plenty of stopping distance and could not stop until it rolled forward into another vehicle.

Foot on brake not accelerator. Could not press harder on brake. Just no power or bite to brake like a loss of power to braking system. Bmwna please take note: serious safety issue. These cars are not safe. Brakes work fine generally but it just takes 1-2 times with loss of power to braking for serious injuries. Will take to NHTSA. Anyone else still experiencing same? How can I get bmw na and local dealers to take me seriously?

I have this problem and the only way I found to stop the car was to pump the brakes really quickly and it would finally stop. Happened to me 4 times and have gone through two vacuum pumps and a camshaft replacement.

The main problem with this has been since it is so erratic as to when it can happen, at the beginning the mechanics were saying nothing was wrong. It was not until a handfull brought their complaints to the NHTSA did something happen.

BMWNA customer service is a joke and you will just be bounced around the phone system. I had an Executive Customer care person handling my case for the past few months and he never returned phone calls or emails. Denial.

Is it a safety issue, yes. This was my 4th BMW and will be my last. They are no where near the vehicle as far as build and reliability they once were.

Until everyone stops drinking the Ultimate Driving Machine Kool-Aide, nothing will change.

There is a lengthy discussion on this over at http://www.f30post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=894833

...and still it's December 2014, and still BMW NA shows that my 2013 328i (N26) is not affected by by any recalls.
