Tires too large for 440i xDrive?
EDIT:
BMW Seattle found that the horn was pushed back due to a previous collision (not the original owner), pushing the fender liner back as well - hence the rubbing. The rubbing has since gone away, but the tire size Vorsteiner recommended is STILL incorrect - the front/rear diameters are not within 1%. Hi all, I purchased a new set of wheels from Vorsteiner, specifically the V-FF 107's, for my 2017 440i xDrive Gran Coupe. Love the new look except the front tires scrub against the inner liners and the fog light connector. I was recommended to go with: 245/40/19 front and 265/35/19 rear. In hindsight, the front tires are actually larger in diameter than the rear - which for the xDrive system is a big no-no. So far my car's been driving okay - but the front right tires still rub against the liners when I'm turning. I can swap back to my old wheels for now - but I still need a solution for these new 19" wheels. I'm pretty angry at Vorsteiner because they told me these would be the right tire sizes and boasted about how great a platform the F36 xDrive would be Thinking about moving down to a lower size e.g. 235/40/19, but that would only buy me a whopping 0.3"... The current tires are straight up pushing against the front liners so I'm not even sure if that would be enough. The fog light connector also appears to be in the way - but I'm not sure if that can be moved. Honestly... I'm pretty disappointed if I have to purchase a whole new set of tires... Does anyone else run similar setups for their 4-series xDrive GC? Last edited by tyh77; 12-14-2019 at 03:27 AM.. Reason: Solution |

235/40/19 a whopping 0.3" shorter and also 10mm narrower so it should eliminate the contact during turning.
235/40, 265/35 tire diameter difference is 0.4% and perfect for x-drive. so you should be good with just changing the front tire size Last edited by alohasurftoad; 12-11-2019 at 03:36 PM.. |

I wonder how large have people gone with their tires for 19" wheels on their 4-series xDrive? |

im not sure of this, i believe the set up on vorsteiner f36 is 255/35/19 front, 265/35/19 rear. the other reason it rubs up front is the +30 offset, pushing the wheels/tires out further causing the taller and wider tire to contact the fenderwell liner during turns. |

My summer front setup uses 245/40-19 Continental Sportcontact 5 on OEM 437M (29 ET) and I am lowered on Eibach pro kit (<10mm in the front). I rub very very slightly on the front inner liner near the side-view camera/Park Assist sensor when reversing and turning near lock.
FYI, lowering ride-height increase caster (or moves the wheel forward) so it will make the rubbing worst. I am surprised your vehicle is rubbing, especially since your vehicle does not appear to be lowered. Perhap your Hankooks are taller than normal. I checked tirerack for the specs on your Hankook tires and compared them to other manufacturers (Conti and Michelin). The overall diameters are the same at 26.7" but the rev. per mile for the Hankook is different: 755 vs 778 (for conti and michelin). The lower rev. per mile for the Hankook would imply the diameter is larger. Could be just a Tirerack typo....I could not find detailed specs on the Hankooks anywhere on the web to double check.... Anyhow, you should consider reducing the fronts to 235/40-19. Your current setup has a front/rear difference of ~1.5%.... recommendation is <1% or as close to 0% as possible. Larry

Do you know what the effects of running > 1% in diameter differential are? I feel like I should be raising this with Vorsteiner. Good points were raised in these responses - rub or not, the front/rear tire sizes don't yield the same diameter - and that is, apparently, not advised for the xDrive? |

I run with Conti SportContact 5P 275/35-19 in the rear (original M3/M4 tire) which has a rev. per mile of 781 (vs 778 for the front) for a ~ 0.4% difference. I think for our vehicles with a rear bias, a slightly large dia in the rear (say a 285/35-19 for my setup) would have been a better since the rears tend to wear faster, but I have not checked for clearance and that tire size is less common. Regarding >1%, I do not know for sure but I have read that the transfer box may prematurely wear-out. In my experience when I first picked up my M4 take-offs and ran with the OE setup (255/35-19 in the front for ~2.3% difference), I notice the front drivetrain slipping/jerking a little. I did not think that was a good thing and replaced the fronts with the 245s. Larry

So you also got Conti SportContact for your fronts, but in 245/40 or 245/35? I would get 235 for my front, but the Hankook Ventus V12 evo2 tire that I'm currently running only has 245/40 and 225/40 (next size down)... but no 235. If that is the case, I'm debating to just switch to 275 in the rear (275/35/19) to stay within 1%... and if the car is truly rear-biased, then the difference in diameter would reduce over time. Seems like 225/40 for the 8.5" wide rim is the absolute minimum for these Hankook tires - it wouldn't offer the same comfort as 245 and protection for the rim from pot holes. I have the option to stick with 245 and go larger in the rear since the dealer just discovered the root cause of rubbing - seems like the front assembly was incorrectly repaired in the past |

You mentioned that you're running 275 - have there been any issues whatsoever? I'm concerned about rubbing if I decide to lower the car (thinking about it, but no current plans in the near future) |

FYI, the 437M rear wheel specs are 10" width ET 40. Larry
