Since purchasing the F31 in February, I've been keeping an eye out on craigslist and the forum classifieds for a winter wheel/tire setup. Yesterday I came across a local set of Style 189s on craigslist with fairly new Pirelli Sottozero winter tires. This morning I picked them up for a VERY good price.

The tires have between 7/32nds and 8/32nds tread left, even wear, and no prior flats or repairs. The wheels have a bit of curb rash and I was told they have no leaks, bends, or cracks. I'll refinish the wheels myself sometime this summer.

Here is one of the wheels:

Surprisingly, I didn't need to fold down the rear seats to fit them in the F31. They fit perfectly in the back!

I do have one question though regarding tire size and staggered wheels. I realize it's OK to run staggered wheels on X drive if the tires all have the same rolling diameter. The Style 189 wheels are staggered (18x8 front, 18x8.5 rear). The tires mounted on the wheels are all 225/45/R18. I assume this will be OK for the X drive system as long as I run the 8.5 width wheels on the rear?

I attended the BMW Ultimate Driving Event in Washington, D.C. at Fedex Field this past weekend. What a great event!

I was able to squeeze into an i8:

I took a ride in an X5 at a 54% incline:

I preregistered to autocross the new 328d M Sport and 428i M Sport. I took first place in my group. I guess 15 years of autocross/HPDE experience accounts for something. The instructors for my group were fantastic and well experienced in various forms of Motorsport. Even though I'm somewhat set in my ways, I kept an open mind and learned a few things. One of the instructors starred in the F&F Tokyo Drift movie. I was able to get a picture taken with my first place trophy (the small blue cone ).

A very fun morning for sure! I would definitely attend again if/when the BMW UDE comes to Washington, D.C.

Thanks!

I put the roof rack back on this weekend. I found some time to go riding with some friends. Loving the rack!

Last year I picked up a roof box ($100 craigslist special ). It's a Thule Ascent 1700, rebranded and sold by Volvo, but still has the majority of the Thule logos/stickers internally. When I bought the box, I didn't have the F31 at the time, so I brought it home with my Volvo 240 'project car'. Looooong roof.

My family is going on vacation soon so I figured it was time to test fit the roof box on the BMW. Success! Roof not as long though...

Thanks! That's the plan. I should be able to use fishing wire and badge remover to remove the VOLVO badges. I plan to replace them with Thule or BMW badges.

I debadged the 'VOLVO' from the roof box. Also moved the cross-bars and roof box back a bit to center it over the roof. I was able to set the tailgate to open about half way without hitting the roof box.

Surprisingly the gas mileage hasn't taken too much of a hit. I'm averaging about half a gallon per mile less than before. I was expecting it to be much worse.

My experience is that the roof box affects the fuel consumption much more?!

My wife, daughter, and I took a ~600 mile (round trip) road trip to the beach last week. With the roof top carrier in place and the car weighted down with passengers and cargo, the F31 managed 31 mpg with a 67mph average. I was very impressed with the gas mileage!

I was able to find a new complete set of new 2015 400m wheels, all season tires, and TPMS sensors. The setup came off a car with less than 100 miles. Not a scratch on them! The TPMS sensors are compatible with my 2015 F31. I'll run these as my winter set. It's still a bit early in the year, but I may mount them on the car this evening.

I found some time to swap on the 400m wheels and Continental ContriProContact SSR tires. I could've waited another 1-2 months, but I was curious to see how the car would perform differently with a square setup and all season tires compared to the 441m staggered setup with summer tires.

While I had the wheel and tire sets off the car, I weighed them on a bathroom scale I keep in the garage. Not super accurate, but it gave me decent ballpark weights.

The 400m wheels (18x8) with 225/45/18 Continental ContriProContact SSR run flat tires weigh 53 lbs each.

The 441m front wheels (18x8) with 225/45/18 Bridgestone Potenza S001 run flats weigh 50 lbs each.

The 441m rear wheels (18x8.5) with 255/40/18 Bridgestone Potenza S001 run flats weigh 56 lbs each.

So overall, the weight of my 400m wheels/tires is the same as my 441m wheels/tires.

Here's a crappy cell phone shot. I'll take better photos eventually.
