Text messages on idrive

Just got the M135i and haven’t had idrive for a few years. Can u get texts on screen and a tone to tell me they have arrived.

Donhave an iPhone so maybe it’s just possible on CarPlay is it? And while on the topic of CarPlay is it worth keeping after the first free year. Have never used it and not clear on the advantages and/or any disadvantages.

All help appreciated thanks.

On my 7er the texts appear in messages in the idrive you can have them read out and then reply via voice to text function I think that's contained within the connected drive and enhanced bluetooth wireless charging option that's using a Samsung phone.

I would image the newer id7 would have this functionality without needing car play.

I have just had my 2017 F30 coded from id5 to id6 and text messages now appear in notifications. I can see or listen then reply by voice.

Think you need pro nav then on the bt options on your phone enable show notifications then they will show on the idrive screen.

Would be interested to know if this can be done without coding. My texts show on my wifes 2018 Renault and are read out but don't show on my 2019 4 series.

OP has id7 with Apple car play prep so everything should be seamless if you get an IPhone, which is the decision I'll have to make whether to get an iPhone to go with the new cars apple prep.

Never mind the text message what's your thoughts on the car itself? I watched a couple of reviews on the car last night and now it's a possible contender for the Mrs next car.

I did post all the coding required to unlock extended Bluetooth with BimmerCode. Will have a look through my posts for you.

Thanks for all the replies. Yes I have ID7 and CarPlay in the new M135i

I know little about CarPlay. Are there any disadvantages to using it? I'm not a big app user so can't really see any big advantages in the system for me but maybe I'm wrong? I prefer to drive with the map on the centre display so the screen having apps like my phone doesn't excite me much really.

For me, Apple CarPlay is useless because it prevents you from connecting two phones, which is why I wanted extended bluetooth in the first place.

I'm not an Apple fanboy at all, but I was in a friends Cayenne S last week and he has car play in it and I was very impressed, all up in the main screen including Waze (nav) which he swears by messaging music the lot seemed very good, but I think it works well like that if that is your phone rather than messing around with two.

Heard back from the dealer genius that texts are only possible with CarPlay in use.

I use Car Play in my Golf all the time and it works really well. I mainly use it for Spotify and Google maps (satellite view is cool).
But you can use for Waze (speed camera alerts) and Apple maps if you really want to.

Also texting works brilliantly. Reads them out and you can send them back and never had any trouble with the speech recognition. Always gets it spot on.
Can also use Siri too.

Think I need to give Carplay a shot.

I tend to drive with the map on screen just because I like the look and don't often use the actual navigation. Can I therefore drive with the Google maps satellite view on screen instead and would this be a big data eater on my phone. Currently don't have a huge data allowance as I'm normally on Wifi but could extend that allowance I'm sure if needed.

The infotainment system is really really poor.

I love the iDrive control, but the features are way way behind even a Vauxhall.

I think you can download Google maps for offline use (so you dont use your data) but not sure if that would include satellite view, probably not. I cant say I've used it.

i also keep the map on my screen, albeit for traffic data (road colours).
