Macan S or wait for the M440i?

While getting impatient waiting for the new M440i been looking around for a replacement for my fantastic 440iGC+MPPSK. Started looking at a Macan S and while yes the options list is huge, at least you can get what you want and not pay for stuff you don't. Never considered or even wanted a SUV before so definately outside the box.

Pricing up came to a smidge under £60k for my spec list:
21" wheels
sunroof
heated/cooled seats
sports exhaust
privacy glass
heated windscreen (yes you have to pay for that!!!)
heated steering wheel
BOSE sound

Didn't bother with active or the air suspension.

M440i estimates would be roughly the same I reckon, but with better standard kit I would think. No discounts with the Macan, 6 months after release we could probably expect TRL to do 15-20% deals on the M440i.

Has anyone moved from a 3 or 4 series to a Macan? Anything you miss?

I realise these are two totally different cars, but just considering something different this time round.

Cheers all

Went from a 2017 440i gc with MPPSK to 2019 Audi SQ5 3.0 TFSI (same platform as the Macan).

SQ5 is the first performance SUV I've owned and so far I'm enjoying the switch. Wanted to move out of the 440i as I've noticed values are now starting to tank hard as the current generation of 4 series is coming to end-of-life.

I'd consider a SQ5 also as well as the Macan.

Yes for the 2nd generation SQ5's they came with petrol engines (same engine as the S4 and S5) between 2017 and early 2019. I managed to get one of the last 2019 registered petrol engined SQ5's before they made the switch to diesel.

Not a fan of Diesels either.

Very different cars, I looked at the Macan (GTS) before I ordered the SQ5 (petrol) which preceded the F90.

Reasons I cancelled the order on the Macan were:

1. impending facelift - now sorted
2. its small - the back seat isnt anything special, the boot wouldnt take a decent sized dog crate, check that out if space matters...
3. everyone talks about residuals but because they are expensive and no discount, whilst the percentage retention is high, the £ cost is high too!
4. Image - I sometimes have to go to work events in the car, I park at football matches etc. Something about the Porsche image that was a bit high profile for that...

If the space works and you can live with the image (and I guess most can!) then they are the best SUV to drive by a mile, but not cheap and is the best SUV better than an M lite to drive...?

The macan forum (macanforums.co.uk) will help spend your money on extras (PASM is generally deemed the minimum extra, 14 or 18 way seats, blah blah) and tell you how utterly fab they are.,..

And davyk31 will be along shortly to repeat that!

Good luck!

Have you driven a Macan ? I wasn't impressed when I had one for a weekend. Ride and handling were 'OK' but nothing special, and the interior packaging was poor i.e. it felt cramped to me compared to the overall size of the car.

We're a family of 5 and it'd certainly be too small to be comfortable for all of us.

Family of 4 here although one is at Uni so not at home much anymore. I haven't driven one yet no, just at the curious stage and getting some feedback from the purveyors of knowledge at Bimmerpost

I had a good go in one a year ago but opted for an f32 440i.

Ultimately I felt the Macan was too compromised to be an all rounder. The back seats are small and the boot is not much to write home about.
It drove very well but you can't escape the fact it's a high riding suv.

I decided to go the whole hog on a coupe and we have an estate car for family duties. The cost difference was the best part of 20k at purchase as I got the 0% apr and high contributions on the 440i. Macan gmfv would be higher for sure. Mine is 16k based on 48 months and 8k p/a. Not sure what the M440i will be but obviously less competitive as its a new car with a higher base price.

A year in and I don't regret it at all. I sit low, planted, it goes like the clappers, can take a toddler seat when needed and is great fun on B roads. Everything else is done by the other car. (side note, Ford Focus estates drive far better than they have any right to on paper).

Macan has prestige, power, great fit and finish, but I couldn't get past the overall driving experience when pushing on, and I have regular access to Scotland's best roads so it was a real consideration for me together with the daily commute.

Genuinely did not see this before my post, honest!

I drove the original Macan in P an D variants and much preferred the petrol in that. Its a great option and if it can afforded I'd probably go that route. Do you think you'd handle the new 4er shape grill. I think it will turn out to be a stunning car TBF...once the shock resides.

I test drove the new Macan S back in the summer. I was very impressed with the ride on std suspension and 21 inch wheels.

As many have said space isn't huge but its a great package.

Cost was the downfall, i was looking at £5k in and £750pm for my speck, when you look at the deals on the X3 at the moment its very hard to justify..

Mmm looking expensive then. Must admit never liked the look of the X3 so will pass on that. Perhaps the wait for the M440i goes on.

Anyone have any idea when it becomes available to order?

While Macan has many fans, I found it to be too small and too expensive for what if offers. In a highly competitive segment, X3 and now X3M + C have a much broader appeal.

Hmmm - depends if the new 4 turns out looking like the concept pictures with that bloody awesome grille. Time will tell! I quite like the Macan visually, although I could never bring myself to buy one - I would always think it's an Audi Q5 (and on the previous platform at that) or the VW, Seat or Skoda equivalent with a different badge and large price tag. And what's with all those switches in the centre console?!

Given you're considering the Macan I'm curious why you're not looking at the M340i tourer? I reckon it'll be an absolute belter of an all rounder!

If you could find one of the few remaining X3MC's then its the same price as Macan at the moment.

When I'd had my 440i GC for a couple of years, I went and sat in a Macan. It immediately struck me that this was a car that I should have looked at when choosing the GC as the packaging/usability was similar.
