GraceNote Database

Dear all -

As you are probably aware, owners of the F30 are able to display the track/album/artiste name on your CIC when you pop in a CD. This is made possible because of music track identification technology (using data associated with the music tracks) created by the company Gracenote.

The Gracenote DB is about 4GB large and resides on the HDD of your CIC.This DB needs to be updated so that it can recognise the latest CDs.

The DB is user upgradeable (via a menu on the CIC) but i have not been able to find the latest DB for BMW cars.

Any idea where i can get the latest DB for BMWs?

I've wondered about updating the database. I don't know where you could get an updated database, but I wonder if you'd post a photo of the screen that allows the update to be loaded. I can't seem to find it in my car.

Hi there - the service menu of our CiC (for gracenote and navi) can be accessed via the following steps

Call up Start menu
• Push controller in up direction for at least 10 s.
• Controller 3 notches to the right
• Controller 3 notches to the left
• Controller 1 notch to the right
• Controller 1 notch to the left
• Controller 1 notch to the right
• Press controller once.
• The Service menu is now added as the last submenu to ”Settings"

Usual disclaimers applies - Please proceed at your own risk

I asked my Service Adviser about this when I bought the car. He had no early idea how the db would be updated in the future.

This worked great in my car. I thought that the GPS displays -- one shows the actual speed in meters per second was pretty cool.

In my experience with dealer service personnel, it would come as no surprise o me if the person you asked how no earthly idea what you were talking about.

Clearly, the service menu described in previous posts means the database is indeed updatable. But I feel sure the only way we are ever going to know how to do it is when someone posts instructions online. Those will either be how to do it yourself or, more probably, what to tell the dealer service person to look up/research/open a PUMA case about.

There is some interesting info in this (rather old) document.

After looking around, I discovered that both Honda and Mitsubishi offer online downloads of Gracenote database updates. Pity BMW doesn't.

And, it turns out the dealer SHOULD have an update (probably on USB for our cars).

I sure hope other posters chime in soon with what they had to tell the service people to do to get them to find these updates. Even better, I hope someone posts an update for it. It would be trivial to go into the service menu and update the database.

Hi All!

Given that some time has passed (more then 1 year+) does anyone have any knowledge of BMW's position on this?

Thanks!

Just spoke a parts rep and he stated the database update comes out once a year. The next update is scheduled to be released in March/April 2014.

I have not managed to find the disc myself. I think my cars are too new for it to be interesting. But it does exist.

If you can find a way to get the disk, I know lots of people here would be interested.

The Disc Image is of ENTD_000002E8_001_009_002, which is GRACENOTE-DB VERS. 1.0, 02/2009.

It is almost 6 years old. People are wanting this?

See here for latest CIC version, GRACENOTE-DB VERS. 1.0, 01_2014 1:

If F30 has CIC Head Unit, then yes. If F30 has NBT Head Unit, then no.

Look at the Interface, and visually CIC and NBT are different:

Name: BMW NAVI.png
Views: 25925
Size: 548.1 KB

Or go to Map Version info screen, and if it shows PREMIUM Map, it is CIC, and if it shows NEXT Map, it is NBT.

Write the Content.xml file and the Gracenote folder to DVD, and update via the CIC hidden Service Menu.

The Root of DVD should be as follows:

\Content.xml <file>
\Gracenote <dir>
