Chances of seeing family over Christmas?

What do people think, maybe just Christmas Day or not at all?

Just wondering if it’s worthwhile doing a big shop (online of course) or just a prawn ring and a cheeseboard for me and the Mrs and a case of Vergina for me?

We've got a daughter in Hull and one in Dunfermline, both usually come home for Christmas, absolutely no idea what will happen this year. We've already said if they want/can come home I'd go and pick them up, neither drive. At the end of the day we've just got to abide with whatever the rules are at the time, last Christmas was a washout as mum was in hospital with pneumonia and sepsis, possibly early version of COVID so we deserve a decent one this year! As the Greg Lake song lyric says, "the Christmas we get we deserve".

My Mum is 85, and she will NOT be spending it alone, so whatever the rules she will be with either me or my brother. She can bubble with us anyway - and has done as my brother has had the virus and is recovering slowly.

Dont we expect Boris the populist to find a way to let us all have a great xmas and then re engage lockdown on 2/1/21

Lets hope we can all be released over the festive season, normally me and the Mrs go out visiting grandchildren on Christmas and the children enjoy their day in their own home. Now then new years eve they will all come to our house and that's when the fridge will be stocked up mainly with wine beer and spirits, if they can't come due to covid it then means I will be pissed every night until the end of January getting through the plonk that's not used.

Very similar situation here.

Mum is 80 and is normally in a family bubble with my sister and her husband/kids. They are planing to be abroad for Christmas so mum will come and stay with us.

She's had to live in lockdown isolation on her own for significant periods this year - whatever happens she'll come and stay with us.

I do expect a significant spike in cases as a result of sending the students home for Chrimbo. February lockdown seems likely IMO.

I'm not banking on it.

Every year I get back home to visit the family in Scotland. In fact not travelled back to the UK at all this year.

Looks like the first time in 30 years I'll be cooking a small chicken and seeing what Christmas will be like here in Switzerland.

Hopefully I'll be able to grab a PS5 to distract myself. Might not be so bad.... Quietly, peacefully frittering away dark afternoons blissfully uninterrupted.

We normally go to my wife's parents home in Poland, and the cross continent road trip has very much become part of our Christmas tradition. But the new puppy and all things considered, means she is going to fly this year (if allowed), and I'll stay at home and look after the menagerie on my own. I must say, I'm quite looking forward to the pleasure of watching crap on TV on my own!

If lockdown does end in December I may do a run up to my family in Scotland, and take the M4 for a little tour of the Highlands, as I've really had no roadtrips whatsover this year.

I think that irrespective of the rules in December a great proportion of the population will do what they want over Christmas and take the consequences after the event. Some will think that we have a vaccine now so it doesn't matter!!
Without a doubt infections will climb in January and another lockdown may well come.

However, we will not be visiting family in Germany this winter and if daughters teacher flat mate buggers off 2 weeks early, we may get to see her, otherwise it'll be just me & the missus and the visit to the mother in laws. Suspect I'll be heading to the office as well, no point in just sitting about!

I won't be seeing my parents over Christmas. They have been really careful over the past 6 months and as much as we will miss Christmas dinner together I don't want to put them in a position that increases their risk. At the end of the day it is one year where we have to do things differently.

I guess the important bit in that is PARENTS, they have each other. There is no way I am leaving my mum to do xmas day on her own, so the only question is which bubble she joins, me or my brother.

Wife's mother is due to fly in, which will make it the first family Christmas we've managed in nine years. The previous eight looked much like the Covid restricted Christmas that many are fearing.

Haven't had covid, but totally agree with your sentiment. It's just a day, life goes on..if we are lucky.

Please don't take this the wrong way as I 100% agree with the sentiment behind what you say, but bloody hell that first line made me laugh.....it's a virus, not the Vietnam War!

I'm not sure we should set the minimum bar for bad experiences at "Vietnam War"

The numbers are not looking good right now around the world. Here in the US there are states that have icu's maxed out or nearly maxed out. As you can see on Worldometers we are really winning the CoV infection game.....in all the wrong ways.

With hospitalizations and deaths rising we are worried that our Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays will be super spreader events that layer on top of already high community numbers. The real problem is not the holidays per se but that with community spread so high and the fact that during the holidays we all relax, there will be a much greater likelihood of infection and spread. Yes many folks will recover, but with some having long term consequences; but more importantly we usually celebrate with parents and older family members and this in theory we risk worse outcomes because of the celebrations.

I admit I don't know what is the best course on a world level, a National level and personal level. We are looking at how we can make the holidays safe. For example do we all get tested and then test any family coming in and thus create a larger safe family bubble? That is possible...

Crazy times for sure.

In the current thread deletion state, are we allowed to mention that war? Maybe we should say WW2 as the yanks won that one, or so they claim!

Haha....Hey is that an example of faux news. . I seem to think I have heard something about that recently, can't really remember though......

Joking aside on an individual level anyone with COVID-19 that spent time in an ICU or is a long hauler, or that lost family or friends, has a different perspective. This goes for our front line folks too.....sorry for the serious thoughts amongst the humor; I was just looking at the negative projections for the US with our skyrocketing cases.
