Weird car crushes.

I must be getting old. Really want a Merc SL400. Old tech, dull interior but metal folding roof. I never learn. Only around 40k for just over a year old.

The SL used to be the top dog in the Merc line-up. No longer with the likes of the S Class coupe and the AMG cars. Very nice place to be though.

The wierdest car crush I can remember is the old Seat Toledo when it had a V5 engine. I'm sure it was around the time I was getting to choose my first company car as a new order. I was desperate for a 320d, E46 back then, but this Seat was intriguing.

Wasn't the Toledo based on an expired Audi? That made it interesting!

I'm fascinated by the SL partly because it is good value for an all aluminium bodied hard top convertible GT. I expect that it will be the last of its breed!

That was the Exeo, which was late 00s, based on the outgoing A4. I think I read that they literally shipped the tooling from the A4 factory to Spain in it's entirety.

They are a very wide car - about the same as the 8GC.

Just before Christmas I did a Waitrose click and collect. There were 3 dedicated bays to park and collect from, and a Panamera turned up next to me, but it took the staff about 20 minutes to retrieve the shopping from the store. Between the Panamera and 8GC there would have been just about enough room for a bicycle in the 3rd bay. Fortunately this wasn't Asda, so annoyance of the waiting drivers was shown by frowning and raised eyebrows...

My weird car crush has always been... the Fiat Panda 100hp. I just think they look bags of fun, I still want one now. For absolutely no reason at all. It looks like a little rollerskate and I want one!

Yep, that's one of mine too. Ever since a holiday in the Italian lakes, these things appeared a form of motoring perfection.

funny half an hour ago when driving home from work I saw a panamera in white at the same motorway merging area I saw the grey one in a few weeks ago. Gosh it did look super thick and bulky perhaps that's why i liked it as I'm an suv guy.
We have a waitrose a mile away from our house and an aldi a little distance away from it the aldi parking lot is chok a block with new posh cars the waitrose lot has older but good cars in my observation.
Hope you are enjoying the 8gc in Black it really appeals to me.

I actually might bite the bullet on a slightly used SL400. Trouble is they are all black. Suit the car. I'm more taken by blue with a light interior as in the brochure. Shame they are not built any more!

I had an R129 Sl320 back in 2001, great car built like a tank however it was a bit of trouble despite the vault like build quality a proper car to drive though and very classy.

This is my current weird car crush:

There is something about the wide low slung stance of the Panamera, and probably the 8GC too. Where I am the local Aldi seems to have the selection of cars you might expect - Kia, Hyundai, Audi, Nissan, Ford... (couldn't resist chucking Audi in there!)

I'm a huge fan of the 8GC - mine is Dravit Grey, but it's one of those weird colours which can look anything from bronze in bright sunlight, to olive green, to matt grey, to black. You can't make a rational case for getting one, but it has a real feel-good factor.

You may have a point - BMWs don't grow old gracefully. I just enjoy throwing Audi into that list!

new car crush alert!
My student who graduated last year(who is also a bmw convert since he joined our establishment) had his g20 330d delivered yesterday. in sunset orange with adaptive and all other options ticked he brought it in to show me.
He dutifully gave me the keys and said you....
Interior looked great very solid. Road noise was low. What blew me was the comfort level over broken roads was equivalent to the g05 x5 with air suspension.
I have owned amongst others E90 320d and f30 335d before slipping into the x5 gang but the car is seriously good in refinement and handling and interior looks and feels the part.
Probably will do a write up in the g20 forum

I still think it's the top dog, iconic car going back to 1954 and is a true motoring classic, plenty of AMG versions as well in fact some of the first and best.
