Mine is the same way, they probably decided that it wasn't worth the bother when evaporation would do the same job. It's not like there's anything that will rust.

It is a strange design but there are no drain holes. And they use it on many models. Their engineers must have their reasons but its is odd.

Has been discussed around here before. (If someone finds the link, please post it).

Bottomline:
- Design is as is, as the same plastic molding is used both for LH and RH vehicles (reversed wipers)
- No drain holes is a weird design decision, but a fact
- Some users have drilled holes in there with no negative effect observed.

I am inclined to do the latter, but would like to know what is underneath and whether the water has a safe path out...?

And there's the rub. Water on plastic, no harm done. Water on metal = corrosion.

Yep, this is normal. There are no drain holes. Again, someone posted a pic with a hole drilled into the plastic to allow the water to drain. I just don’t know what’s underneath so not sure if that’s a safe option.

Every time I was my 2016 435i, after rinsing, I immediately open the hood and take an old towel and blot out the pooled water in those areas first. It’s not just become a habit to get that water out.

I drilled a hole on my 435 - the water will then drain down to the lower piece of plastic exactly where the little 'funnel' is that directs rest of water down thru the normal drain route to underneath the car

Been that way for yrs, no harm done, there is nothing in the path of the water draining that will get damaged

Just because BMW didn't put one there originally doesn't mean that putting a hole in is a bad thing - there is a TSB out for the very bottom drain vent that BMW DID put in that needs to be removed due to the fact that it clogs and water will NOT drain completely - so it's not like BMW engineering is foolproof

Could you provide a photo of your drainage?

It is dirt. He is mistaking the reflection on the left side for rust.

^^^^ interesting. Are the holes connected to anything underneath (such as a drain tube), or does it openly drain onto the "shelf" and wire harnesses before eventually draining onto the ground normally?

I'll have to check, but I think it just drains onto the "shelf" underneath. Certainly nothing like a drain tube connected to them.
