I noticed this hasn't seen a lot of activity lately, but I've just started having this issue on my '13 335i. When people are saying the fan was replaced, do you mean just the fan, or the whole fan assembly? I can find just the fan for about $80, but the whole assembly is 10x that amount.

Bump

I know this is an old thread but now there are those like me that purchased a used 2013 or early 2014 335i msport that have this issue (no need to tell me I should have bought CPO, salt is already rubbed in)

Bought mine (7/13 prod date) 2014 model year and it is limping after driving spirited.
Pulled up codes with bimmerlink and found the infamous 1A2108 code

I also found this static link to the tsb everyone is mentioning. Shame it’s only covered under warranty but at least there’s a fix

https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2014/MC-10149351-9999.pdf

Has anyone had luck getting this done outside of warranty for free? It’s borderline a safety issue.

For those that had this fixed outside of warranty, what are the costs? I’m reading about $700. Does it have to be done at a Bmw dealer bc of the software flash required?

Besides this, car is running like a champ!

I recently got error code 1A2108 from my BM3 software. No CEL on dash and car drives fine.

I haven't noticed anything else but I am going to buy the fan and replace it myself.

I notice that a lot of people go into limp mode but why I haven't yet.

Can anyone confirm if the OEM electric fan on an f30 335 msport is 800watts? And is there an upgrade available in the market?

Just experienced this today for the first time. After being on the highway for a while, car refused to accelerate after about 2200 RPM. After 30-60 seconds, the car accelerated like normal... until it didn't again! No CEL, no codes, no drivetrain malfunction, literally no warnings. Oil temperature was low as described by others. Seems that the problem may be similar to what others have described. Is there an extended warranty that BMW has issued for this problem? This is a major safety issue for sure.

I think my fan failed too

Strangely I didn't get any notifications from this thread. Since I posted at 174k miles I'm at 194k now. I've had limp mode a few times since but pretty infrequent. Mostly only on drives over 4 or 5hrs. I'll definitely try replacing the temp sensor to see what happens.

Purchased my '13 F30 N55 M-sport just before the pandemic. Went into limp mode (no CEL) on a few occasions usually after driving for an hour and trying to accelerate on the highway. This past week I have experienced the drivetrain malfunction warning with the following fault codes via BM3: 1A2108 & 120308. Going to have the fan replaced next week so hopefully the issues are resolved for FC 1A2108. As for FC 120308; between pressure converter, vacuum leak, boost solenoid, diverter valve or wastegate, hopefully my mechanic can pinpoint the exact cause.

Also bumping - me and you are twins! Did you do your fan upgrade to the newer 850W yet? Just picked up a 2013 335i M-Sport and sorted out 120308 - my problem was with a boost solenoid and is now replaced but 1A2108 is a persisting one for me. Has anyone in recent times had experience with doing either of the 850W fan and/or the software flash? What have everyones courses of action been here out of warranty etc.

Will replace with 850w fan and update you
Car went into limp mode for first time on the highway on the way to work also a CEL appears noticed oil temps were at 250 mark highest it’s ever been

Fan stopped working/AC stopped working on 2017 340i

Hey All,
Just wanted to give a heads up to folks with later model BMWs, the fan issue is still a thing. My AC stopped working here in PHX and then got a Overheating warning during stop and go traffic. I was only a few miles from the house so just limped it along, car would cool down if I was driving over 30MPH. Anyway, turned out to be the fan, I found one for $250 off Ebay which I was able to pick up from the warehouse here in PHX, so no shipping. Was easy to replace, just took out the airbox and intake hose, disconnected the fan wire, took out the one screw and unclipped the driverside upper clip, and pulled it right out.
At least it was an easy fix I suppose, wish they would use better fans though.
