Double vision windshield

Hello,

I have a 14 335i with HUD. Issue is at night time I see a faint double of things that emit light (ie tail lights, red lights, etc). My windshield is sparkly clean as I keep them clay bared.

Its not my eyes because I only see double in this car and oddest thing is it only happens at night. The HUD text is razor sharp though.

This.

Also, is this the only car you have with hud? The glass/windshield is different from a vehicle with hud.

Yep this is the only car I have with a HUD. I may have to check with an eye doctor though it would be unfortunate at my age.

I had someone else drive my car today and they said they see it as well. They did say I concentrate too hard though. I later messed around with the seat height and was able to lessen though not eliminate the double.

We later took my gti out for a drive right after and don't notice this.

I still rather have it be the car then my eyes though lol

Sounds like more of a problem with target fixation, where you are focusing on the HUD display and surroundings instead of looking through it.

I have a bit of astigmatism, but have never experienced problems with HUD. (I also have one eye undercorrected so it acts as a reading lens.)

An HUD windshield has a reflective layer on the inside of the windshield in the HUD display region, which prevents the HUD display from appearing as a double image. That would explain what's happening. It's not you.

I know exactly what the OP is referring to!
I see the same - taillights and headlights are all double. Since I also have HUD, I have always assumed that is a side-effect of the special windshield. This said, I have not compared with any other car with HUD.
My other car (Audi) is without a HUD and I see no reflection there.

It is a bit annoying during night, I try not to focus on it and ignore it.
I doubt it is an eye problem, I asked my better half once whether she also sees the double lights... she said yes with some hesitation, so I will ask again Might be possible to catch that effect on a photo as well!

P.s. I have also noticed difference depending on the headlight type. Old-style halogen lights are not being reflected (are not double), LED tail-/head-lights, being a sharp source of light get a clearly reflected twin. Xenons are sowmewhere inbetween but also have a clearly visible doubleganger.

Worth asking if the windshield is still the original OEM glass.

Astigmatism makes sense, since it has to do with the shape of ur corneas and having 2 light sources going through ur eye. Lights looks more dispersed. But I see the double thing OP talks about also. I think it has to do with the reflective coating that is apply for the HUD to display properly. Doesn't bother me as I only notice it on the passenger side but not ahead of me.

I see it in front of me (traffic in opposite direction). But again - not a sign of it on my Audi or when out of the car. So there is definitely a windshield-specific element.

Easy way to see if it is astigmatism is to view it with your camera on your phone. If it is sharp, then it is astigmatism. I’ve had astigmatism and had issues with projected displays for some time and this helps me test things out more easily before buying.

Could be cataracts too, which are not limited to old people. I have minor ones. Only bothers me at night. Some doubling but more of a starburst with bright head/tail lights. But if you're under 50, more likely astigmatism, or the HUD material on the glass.
