Not correct. My 2017 330d is Euro 6 but no Adblue. As said, all x35d’s were Euro 6 compliant

The original base level of EU6 for diesel can be achieved without AdBlue technology. It was first achieved by some manufacturers at least three years ago now, maybe more. Others more knowledgeable than me will correct me, I'm sure. The latest EU6d-TEMP standard for diesel requires use of AdBlue technology. If I was in the market for a used diesel - which I'm not - I'd make sure it was as high up the EU6 scale as poss., and would definitely be looking for one using AdBlue

All 5-series diesels from summer 2013 are Euro6 compliant.

From BMW Media Release 05/2013

Plus, all the engine variants already meet the stipulations of the EU6 exhaust gas standard not due to come into force until September 2014. To this end, the diesel models come with nitrogen oxide-reducing BMW BluePerformance technology as standard.

Yes, BMW were one of the manufacturers making diesel Euro6 compliant for Sept 14 without SCR and AdBlue. DPF with the additional NOx storage reduction (NOx trap) made the grade in many models.

There's been a lot of confusion, even in the BMW model line up. The first BMW Euro6 compliant diesels were achieved with and without SCR. BMW's BluePerformance also confused the issue, as it could mean with SCR and AdBlue in some models, or could simply mean fitted with an additional NOx trap.

You can achieve EU6 - as first defined several years ago now - without AdBlue but the latest iteration, which is EU6d and is a lot more stringent on CO2 and NOx, requires use of AdBlue technology. All of the latest BMW diesel engines use AdBlue tech as far as I know

Current standard is not simply Euro 6. Under the new WLTP test regime, tier level is EU6d-TEMP. SCR with AdBlue is necessary to pass the NOx emission test.

In other words, not all 'Euro 6' referenced engines are equal, not to the same test standard, or certified to the same emission levels.

Thank you Pete
So if you're in the market for a new/new-ish diesel and want to avoid being banned from a major city in the near future, make sure it's EU6d-TEMP compliant and not just EU6

Definitely.

You mentioned EU6d in your earlier post, that is even tighter on NOx emissions, when that comes into force 2020/21. There are a few manufacturers achieving that standard already, models like the latest Jaguar XE and XF 2.0d 180.

The N57 engine can be euro 5 & 6 without adblue.
I think euro 6 is only possible with start stop technology.
Hence the later cars are 6.

BMW achieved EU6 in N57 engines with the addition of a NOx Storage Catalyst (NSC). For example in the 3-series, was standard on the EU6 335d engines. Added as a BluePerformance 'option' on the 330d to make it EU6 compliant, later to also be standard.

It's a bit hit and miss.
The bottom line is that the writing is on the wall for diesals. The government want the future to be electric and no emissions other than water vapour....

My 66 plate 35D is Euro 6. No adblue, and so glad it doesnt have it.
Adblue was added to heavier vehicles like 5 series, X5’s,etc. possibly 3 series estates to my knowledge

What has happened to that tech? I remember reading about it when it was first invented at Loughborough University. Did Bosch buy the licence to manufacture?
