Brake failure recall
So BMW said they were gonna send the owners a recall memo in December-ish, well its January now and I still haven't received anything. I got my car at the end of 2012 so it should be one of the ones that need a call. Just curious if anyone got their memo from BMW yet?

Its not actually a break failure it would just be a loss of power assisted breaking if it actually happened.
Have you actually checked, using you VIN, your car is part of the recall? |

I actually got the letter. Took the car in for its first oil change/warranty things. The service advisor told me that the recall has been put on a halt for now as a result of the number of vehicles being recalled. I think they'll only be doing it on a case-by-case basis till further notice.

Those that got the letters means their VIN is covered under the recall... but the letter notes that you have to wait for parts and the dealer will set it up then.
I called BMW Canada on Monday and they said still no parts available. The agent did confirm only those that are covered will get the note. No ETA on parts.. that's fking sad to be honest... BMW probably has all available good parts to the factories to keep production going. At any rate, what I've read is that the failure rate is so low (less than 1%) and it tends to happen at low mileage.. so the probability is ever diminishing.... |

people were saying they lost their breaks completely, and the title of that was brake failure too, and as i said, bought it at the end of 2012, and according to left lane news, it was their 2012 - 2014 320I and 328I, so i assumed my is too. Plus Id be scared shitless if I was driving to school and I suddenly lost the breaks. |

Have you actually checked your VIN to see if your car is on the list mate?
It may not even be there as not all cars were, this would save potential stress and worrying in the first instance. Mine is going in next week to have the work done. Be safe. |

Hey, I've been reading, alot of people checked their vin, and they saw nothing, even the people who received letter said they went to dealers and they search the vin number and got nothing. I called the dealer yesterday, they said all they got was a control unit recall. Something about reprogramming the control unit. Never heard of that though.

I'd think my "control unit" would need to be reprogrammed or least the body module. Damn thing won't recall mirror settings from the key sometimes but will recall them from the seat memory button. |

My F31 is going in on the 27th for the day to get the recall completed. I did not receive a followup letter from BMW but found out that the repairs were released in the recall window on the My BMW webpage. Apparently there is a fair bit of reprogramming required as part of the recall work.

Haven't received a letter or had any issues but figure I will inquire about it when I take my car in for its first service in about a month or so.

Only if my dealership (Town and country) has the time for it... My brother's M3 just went in for diagnostic test and some other issues with the engine, and its been over a week and they finally called telling us, we finally tested out the car... all he got to replace the m3 for the week was a corolla. So I kinda do not want to bring mine in yet HAHA. Luckily my brother's been out of town so, no need to deal with the Corolla replacement.

note received from Transport Canada this week....
-------- BMW Canada has confirmed that they took delivery of parts verify recently and will be sending out a follow up communication shortly. I expect that you should receive instructions in the next week or two. The Motor Vehicle Safety Act, which is administered by Transport Canada, does not prescribe a timeline for the availability of parts. While we monitor the repair actions and owner communications, we do not have authority to compel a manufacturer to divert parts from an assembly line, nor to supply parts within a certain timeline. The requirements under the Act relate mainly to owner notification - By law, BMW Canada was required to advise all owners of the defect, the safety consequences associated with the defect, and the measures to be taken to correct the defect. The owner communication letter you received in September complies with these requirements. It should be noted that, under the Act, BMW is not required to repair the defect, nor to pay for the necessary repairs. I hope this clarifies the requirements. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact me directly. Sincerely, |

Had two recalls performed on my car yesterday in addition to its first oil change. The first was to remove a screen from the bottom of an equipment compartment as the screen can fill with dirt and prevented drainage from taking place. The brake recall was the second. The SA told me it would either be three hours or three days when I dropped the car off. The work reportedly involves installing a spring between the vacuum line and the camshaft to maintain a minimum clearance. If during the recall work it is noted that the camshaft is of a particular type, then the camshaft is replaced resulting in a three day repair. Following is a link to the US recall notice SIB. http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/cs...3V454-2186.pdf
I only received the original notification letter from BMW in early December. Never did receive a follow up letter specifically advising my car was on the list. The recall appeared one day in early Jan on the "My BMW" portal on bmw.ca. It was one of the few times that site was actually up and running with meaningful information.

I got the recall letter in mail today. I'm in mississauga. Basically letter says that parts are now in stock and BMW will not charge for repairs. About 2 hours work estimated.

Got the letter as well today.
Well perfect timing anyways, the front interior door panels and steering wheel are getting replaced under warranty by this or next week, given parts are supposed to arrive tomorrow. See if I can weasel a loaner out of them... |

thanks for the link. Any ideas how camshaft replacement could equate to a three day repair? Are they having to request approval on the replacement part and getting it shipped to the dealer? |

My SA told me that they had two F30's that needed the camshaft replaced as part of the recall. That's why I was told of the three day time frame and the reason I paid the $25 for the loaner given that I might need it for the better part of the week. My F31 was the first vehicle they had seen the drain plug recall on. Perhaps it is limited to F31's only.

I had the drain plug SB performed and the camshaft inspected. Thankfully it did not need replacement.
Incidentally the douchebag salesperson from my dealer who "promised" to make a service loaner available to me (at the time of purchase, in the case of any service) did not even respond to my email request. Good thing it didn't influence my decision to buy the vehicle - but I won't be buying there again. |
