Looking at Pilot Sport 4S Tires - Any Feedack?
Hey all, I'm getting ready to replace my Bridgestone Potenzas (S001 RFTs) as they are pretty much at the wear bars. Leaning towards the non-RFT MPS 4Ss. Anyone have any experience with these?
The one thing I like about RFTs is the crisp turn-in you get due to a very stiff sidewall. So, I'm a bit concerned that I will lose some of that with the 4Ss. Any thoughts or experiences are appreciated! |

I've driven 500-1000 miles on my set, which is mounted on a F31 Wagon. I went directly from the OEM RFT to the Pilot Sport 4S, while also changing coilovers at the same time. So far, I'm very pleased with the setup. Very comfortable, but also confidence inspiring. As you will read online, the Pilot Sport 4S is universally praised as the best in class.

Very happy with my set having had a couple track days, autoX, and over 10000 miles. They have been resilient even though I am not particularly kind to them with my driving activities. They perform well on a track in the right temperature zone but at the end of the day, they are expensive ROAD tires. I don't want to have to spend a couple hours de-marbling them after a track day and feel their premium price is more representative of their performance being so well balanced to their road manners, rather than their ability to handle track duty. I'm going to get another set of wheels and cheaper track tires for that abuse next season. However, as far as a tire for a going fast on the roads and shoring up the handling of your F30 A LOT, you can't go wrong. I'm considering giving the Conti Sport Contact 6 a try next round, but that's a way down the road for me.

On the above post, would agree with going with separate wheel and tire set-up for the track. On my track car I'm running Toyo R888Rs on 18s all around. Have been very happy with those tires. |

Why is that comical? Because a year earlier they claimed the MPSS was better than the SC6 because they stated “subjectively” the MPSS had the edge over SC6 (even though the SC6 won all their tests) because the MPSS gave slightly more “feedback” to the driver than the SC6. Guess you can have it both ways. That’s why AutoBild is the most respected Independent Car Magazine/Site in EU compared to some YouTube Sites, who coincidentally had just gotten back from their MPS4S 5 Star all expenses paid rollout in California. |

Have the PS4S on the 435i (704 suspension, 19" staggered M rims) and love them. Yes the sidewall is softer than a RFT, which is normal for any RFT versus non-RFT. On street the PS4S are indeed grippy sun or rain, and turn in is very good and progressive at the limits. They provide very good feedback. You may want to raise your pressure by 2 to 4 lbs over what it says on the door label to 'stiffen' the sidewall a bit, then play around with pressure range until she feels / works as you prefer.
And of curse overall mechanical grip potential is far better with the PS4S than the RFT, yet am sure you already knew that.

PS4S
Went straight from taking delivery of my car to Discount Tire to get the hideous RFT off, and put PS4S on. Great tire- excellent grip in wet and dry, quiet, very sharp handling. Had MPSS on my M235, and they were excellent too, but the PS4S seem a little better in terms of handling, quietness. I run the PS4S with 2 PSI over the door tag recommendations for a slightly stiffer sidewall. Had the Continental DW's on a past 135, and they were really good too. PS4S are my favorite so far.

I replaced the stock RFT (to be used for 'winter' until I wear them out and replace them with proper winters) with PS4S a few months ago on my '18 440i GC. Love love love them. The traction and braking distance in the wet is noticeably better, much quieter, and the car just feels more planted when corning at higher speeds.

PS4S is 1st and MPSS is 2nd in TireRack survey results. I've had both and I can attest to those ratings. I rarely if ever see SC6 being run at HPDEs. I've had decent success with the PS4S and PSS at HPDEs. The problem with SC6 is that they are pretty much unavailable. There are no 18" tire offerings. So they pretty much are this mythical tire offering that the vast majority won't be able to procure. Another thing to factor in is that they are 240 tread wear rating tires. The PS4S and the PSS are in the 300 treadwear rating so they most directly compete with the Extreme Contact Sport. Bridgestone has a new S007A in the 240 treadwear rating that I would consider because at least they are available in 18". |

As you note, the generic SC6 is rare in USA outside of a few specific Audi variations. TireRack does not sale the generic SC6 so they could not be rated if anyone even wanted to. The SC6 is also considerably cheaper than the MPS4S head to head so that evens out the lower treadwear rating. The MPS4S is a fine tire. My only point for posting is to correct the statement they are universally praised for best in class. Last edited by IK6SPEED; 07-14-2018 at 11:02 AM.. |

I just bought some with my VMR v801’s.
Staggered setup... 225/40/19 and 255/35/19. These tires are incredible. Between wheels and tires, took 10 lbs out per wheel. They stick like glue. Best... is tread wear rating. |

In fact, I would argue that, at best, the SC6 is a version of "dumping". It's when you release a product at a price that's substantially lower than either its competitors or even manufacturing costs just to grab a few headlines. I would also argue that since it's been out for a while but still not available, then Continental is not actually serious about actually selling this tire. If the SC6 was available for purchase, then perhaps the cost argument against the PS4S would hold weight. Basically, the SC6 is a fairy tale tire that doesn't exist in real life. |

Available at any tire place in EU. So much for fairy tales. Using your logic, AntiDazzle headlights and Laser Headlights are a fairytale as well. The difference is SC6 tires are actually DOT approved. Last edited by IK6SPEED; 07-14-2018 at 01:15 PM.. |

So it sounds like you, along with a "few forum members", and the US DOT were sent a few tires by Continental. Great. *golf clap*. |
