Normally you just need to connect power & ground cable and it will already work.
If you want full function, you need the reversing signal etc., but I'd say it's not really necessary. Of course you have to buy an aut. dimming mirror, which is mechanically plug&play. |

Hi
It is quite simple. By a electrochrome mirror. By the correct plug with cables (see etk.cc) from BMW. Connect the loose ends of the cables with the rain sensor cables. --> there are three pins (look into rheingold a there you can find the wiring plan) One is ground, one is power 12V and the third is LIN Bus (violet/black). The LIN Bus is necessary to get all electrochrome functions like no dimming when the interior light is switched on. Good luck! Greetings Radair |

I have done it. Pretty straight forward operation. You can connect all wires to the rain sensor and it would work fine, however the mirror uses the KL30 power from factory comparing to the KL15 for the rain sensor.

it is not that simple.
I have a rain sensor in my F20 - I have bought an autodimming mirror from another F20. If I connect just power and ground it DOES NOT WORK If I connect it to another car that had the dimming mirror - the mirror works well What I noticed there are 4 cables to work with +12v Ground GEAR SENSOR 4th cable that works with map lights (map lights on - the mirror does not work) what is funny on the gear sensor you have about +8V when you select reverse it drops for a second to 0V and then +8v again Any idea how to make it work? Remember +12v and ground - NOTHING WORKS |

I am interested in doing this too, in addition to the side mirrors, for my 2012 328i, but was told by a German specialty shop I go to that BMW told them it will cost $10k to retrofit since my car wasn't factory built with the necessary wiring. Apparently a lot of wiring needs to be installed That $10k is obviously bull, but I'd like details from anyone who has been able to do this.
Anyone have any success in doing this? I found a thread from Bimmerfest but there aren't any more details aside from a pin connector map. Last edited by boafriend; 01-16-2017 at 08:44 PM.. |

I used the pinout to use the wires of rain sensor. The dimmer works!

I have a mirror from a donor vehicle with options S430 (Interior/outside mirror with auto dip) and S431 (Interior rear-view mirror with auto dip) This mirror has 4 cables: (I tested it with a power supply and compass and homelink worked fine, but no auto dip at all) Pin 3 - (+) Pin 6 - LIN Pin 9 - LED for alarm status Pin 10 - GND My car only provides wiring for Pin 9 an 10, so the FEM does not know there´s a mirror. Rain Sensor looks the same with the 3 wires, as described in that other post, the pinout should be: Pin 1 - (+) Pin 2 - Lin Pin 3 - GND Do you think if I wire it, this can work? I´m wondering how the LIN bus assigns a new LIN ID to the new discovered mirror if the FEM was configured to not have it. Has anyone else tried this from manual mirror to auto dip? Thanks in advance. Very easy if you have the rain sensor:
Rain sensor; PIN Type Color 1 + Red/White 2 LIN Violet/Grey 3 Ground Brown/Black Mirror; PIN Type Color 3 + Red 6 LIN Black/White 10 Ground Brown Coding info: Without VO; FEM_BODY; FEM_01 > PfInternalMirror 3120 > ISP_EC = aktiv FEM_01 > PfInternalMirror 3120 > ISP_KOMPASS = nicht_aktiv FEM_01 > PfInternalMirror 3120 > LIN_ISP_VERBAUT = aktiv FEM_01 > PfInternalMirror 3120 > PF_INMI_LIN_VAR = ISP_g_EC With VO; FEM with 431 option |

Thank you very much! I just wired (+) and (LIN) to the mirror and it worked! Luckily I did not need to code my car as the LIN commands were already available in the LIN Bus to make the mirror work. Even the console intensity control is able to dim the compass intensity. Thanks all for helping out and contributing, I can provide pictures or any additional details to anyone interested, just send me a PM. |

Thank you all for the information. It works great. I didn't even need coding.
First I connected the mirror GND and +12V in test an thought the mirror was defective. Later I decided to install the mirror anyway and connected GND, LIN and PWR. I made a splitter cable from the Anti Condens Sensor of the Climatronic (also behind the mirror). It worked right away. I didn't have a rainsensor but I do have Automatic Climate Control. It worked without coding, even the revese signal disables the dimming! |
