Do I get a 435, 435xi, or E92 M3?

Looking for my next purchase for the summer.. Currently have a 428i w. Dinan.. Can't decide between a 435, 435xi, or E92 M3?
Any opinions / input would be appreciated! I might want to go manual again..

Of course the M3 will be the superior driver's car, but there are so many factors to consider. What do you want to do with the car? What are your criteria?

Weekend cruiser mainly, a car to drive to work a couple days a week, and something w. Some balls.. only thing giving me second thoughts about the e92 is the older interior, possible $$ maintenance costs soon.

435 RWD unless you are in a snowy/wet climate. Plenty fast enough for what you describe and updated interior. The E9X interior is really dated imho. CPO or go home. Good luck shopping!

for just a weekend toy i'd get the m3. you'll only drive it when you want to focus on driving, so ignore interior concerns. i've found that you get worried about stuff like that when you're overthinking a purchase, but once you're in the car you'll find it's plenty. you don't need the latest idrive and LED headlights to enjoy driving. and imo maintenance on a weekend car shouldn't be a concern because you can do a lot of the maintenance yourself typically and take your time with it since it's not your DD.

The problem with used M3s is finding one that hasn't had the bejeezus run out of it. The nicer low-mileage cars are expensive, so if you find one that seems really cheap, beware. That high-strung V8 will be expensive to service or repair. You might consider an M-Sport 435 RWD and add some tuning for a bit more power, and you'll probably spend about the same as you would for the last-generation M3.

Depends. We just did a short term lease assumption because we'll need another car for a year or less and didn't want to buy. Thought it was my chance to get an F80, but when I weighed all the variables, it just seemed overkill for my short commute (about 100 miles/week). Went for the 335 (tune and AA exhaust) since I don't plan to track and just need a decent DD with a little power for occasional fun. The e90 M3 is a great car (drove a friend's for a couple days a few years back), but if it's just a DD for public roads, maybe it's overkill (not to mention expensive at this point)? Just depends on your wants/needs, etc.

For weekends - E92 M3 LCI - interior is less outdated than pre LCI and the V8 is brilliant

If you end up going with the 435i make sure you do get it in a manual so it's sportier and a bigger change from what you have.

You'll get used to the extra power real quick no matter which car you end up with.

Fixed it for you

For all seriousness, drive both and find out whether you like auto or manual, they're both completely different for how the car drives.

Many great comments by others. My 2 cents.... Had the same decision two months ago, M3 (M4 actually, i don't do 4dr cars ever) or 2014 CPO 435i used with some Dinan tweaks. Went 435i as it felt better for my goal of DD with carting around others at times plus an occasional street course track use. Saved some serious $$ on 435i over M4. Did the whole car pricing, projected/extended service costs, warranty, etc.

1st, not the xdrive.

After that, the biggest question is how long are you going to keep it? If only a couple years, get the M3, it's value is down and if you get a nice one and keep it nice you will do OK when you switch next, the 435, not so much.
If you might keep it awhile, you have to decide if you want the upkeep for a possible future collector like the V8 M3 (they have engine rod bearing issues I believe), or a more drive and sit option of the 435 that you dump at low value as soon as it starts giving you trouble.

Just because we have some disposable income doesn't mean we need to dispose it. As cars are changing so drastically now, there are some cars you can own, enjoy and not throw money out the window in the long term. The M3 might be one, but it likely wouldn't be trouble free.

Curious....why not the xdrive? I may be relocating to Chicago and am concerned about my RWD in the winter. Thought xdrive might be an option.

In that case, I would buy the M3. You won't lose half of your money in 2 years like you likely will with a newer 435. The M3 is the older body, so it has depreciated pretty low already the 435 will take a hit in 2 or 3 years when the new body comes out. Plus the M3 will be more fun to drive. V8s are going away, and the steering feel is better.

It isn't as sporty and the OP is looking for a fun to drive model for occasional nice weather fun.

I live around Chicago and would not buy xdrive, not even for my daily, but I have had this discussion to death and don't want to start it up again - it really creates a divide and just gets off track. There are pros and cons each way.

Feel free to look back at some of these threads over the last 1 or 2 years, or PM me if you have any interest in my thoughts.

Maintenance will be a factor, although my friend who previously owned the E92 M3 swears by it in terms of reliability. Standard maintenance will still be a bit pricey but who cares. If its a weekend / summer car, and maybe a commuter a few days a week when its nice - I'd say take the gamble on the M3. That car is a legend. I'm planning on getting one in the next year or so and keeping it long term as a garage queen. I'm beginning to miss my E92 335 and I figured I might as well replace it with its big brother...

Good luck!
