Hi Everyone,
My car 1s 2016 LCI and I don't think the previous owner updated the idrive at any stage from when she bought it, is it possible to update it to a newer version

What version do you have?
Go to your iDrive About Version.
In theory on an NBT Evo on version 5 you should be able to go to a 6 no problem. It's just a skin.

I've just been through every option I can on my idrive and I can't find the ' about idrive' or which version it is, and that's with the engine running and not running
How else can I find out ?

I'm no expert, sure one of those will be along soon..

But I dont think it's an easy/quick update to NBT Evo ID5 to get the newer tiles and updated bits.
I'm sure it's quite an involved process.

I'm the same; 2016 LCI but with the slightly older looking navigation and no tiles.

2nd half 2016 LCI came with the ID5, 1st half came with ID4.

If the main menu is list then flashing the idrive to the tile menu is possible but not advised - the ID4 Evo headunits only have 2gb of ram and tend to crash when flashed with the ID5 firmware.

if you have the smaller tile menu then changing to the live tile, ID6, is simple - code HMI_ID_VERSION = ID6_LITE.

You can replace the ID4 evo HU with an ID5 unit and it will be plug and play if it's coded and activated to your cars' VIN but firmware > March 2018 will cause the screen to go black occasionally, that can be addressed by replacing the screen or putting earlier firmware on it.
