Warning! Graphic Images!!

Just picked up a 2013 328i M-Sport. Owner did not know when last oil change was done. He said the wife usually took care of it and she took it to a Jiffy lube etc...

I-drive said 6000 miles overdue...
I changed the oil asap and found this...

Name: Oil Filter.jpg
Views: 1157
Size: 95.2 KB

When i took off the filter cap, the filter was just sitting in the bottom of the housing. not snapped into cap. I thought that was odd...when i picked it up, only 1/2 of the filter was in my hand!

The window sticker says the MSRP was 50K. Hard to believe a person would take it to a Jiffy Lube for service.

I'm going to get a UOA from blackstone on the oil I took out, and another in about 3k...

China filters are worse than I thought!!

I doubt that the country of origin is the problem. My guess is that filter has seen a lot more than 10k miles of service. More like 40k.

made in Germany vs made in china lives up to expectations again. I think the more important question why would you buy a bmw from someone who clearly doesnt give a shit about maintaining it?

I had a K&N filter come apart kind of like that, OEM is the only way to go.

A lot of stuff made in China is high quality. Plenty of your OEM parts are made in China. Stop equating that country of manufacturing with "bad quality" because it's simply not true.

Plenty of OE parts from BMW fail before their documented lifespan. What's your take on that? Smh.

This was definitely caused by user error. That filter has been in there much longer than they said. When he said he doesn't know when the oil change was done that was your first mistake.

I work at a dealership and the amount of people that don't bring their cars in on time for FREE service under warranty is ridiculous!!!!!!!! So many people go 20k-30k miles without getting the oil change done.

The "MANN" filter i use is just as paper as this Chinese made one. It looks to me the above picture shows evidence of over 10000 miles usage.

"6000 miles over due"... With a change interval of ~10,000 that means they put about 16,000 on that filter. Of course that assumes they changed it the last time it was "serviced".

Scary.

Finally got UOA report

It took awhile for me to get the report back. I have read on other forums the USPS holding the container for further inspection that Blackstone Labs provides to send in oil sample. I'm not sure what took so long for them to get it. I called them 4 days after delivery of sample and they said it would be done that evening. still took another 4 days to get the report...
looks like the only issue is some fuel dilution. I will get another UOA at next oil change to see if it's still an issue.
anyway, here it is...

So you know for sure he doesn't give a shit about maintaining the the car?could it be the jiffy lube didn't know how to reset the light? maybe it had been 16 k on the oil...I dont know...
Have you seen the rest of the car? did you hear the car run? did you see the inside? did you see the paint? tires? interior? No you didn't...I did and used my best judgment to purchase a car with specific options I had been looking for about 6 months.
2013 M-Sport, black sapphire metallic, leather, HUD, heated seats, sport seats, pro nav, park distance control, B/U camera, comfort access, and shadow line trim. interior clean as a pin, no dents, paint is great, 70% Michelin pilot SS tires.
11.5k...I don't think that's too bad of a deal

This is my take:

Toys with lead paint, tires manufactured without a safety feature that keeps them from coming apart (500k), contaminated pet food, poisoined baby milk, and hazardous toothepaste from china...Simply not true? Get your facts straight fella...

Whats your take on that?? Smh...

If it makes you feel any better keep in mind that in Europe the normal BMW oil change interval is 30 000 km which is over 18k miles.

That you should be consistent in this analysis and believe the same about American manufacturing as well.

There's lead everywhere in this country, even in home water pipes (re: FLINT).

You can't conflate those instances to a whole country, or a whole group of people. That's the lesson.

Greed knows no nationalities or borders. You don't have to go all the way back to Upton Sinclair to find the many examples right here in the USA, right up to the present day.

To me, the oil was probably changed but not the filter. Jiffy lube probably didn't have the required filter in stock so they left the original.

I never said other places dont have issues... I only dissed a filter... only 1 filter not all there products...China is by far the worst on all kinds of products and that's a fact. if you like they're stuff, buy all you want. It's a free country pal...
go make your own thread and promote the hell out of 'em...you won't see me there jacking your posts.

have a great life...
