I got diagnosed with a loose timing chain on my N26 engine, thats has 80,050 miles. I know that this is one of the faults on the car, so BMW has a lawsuit on them for timing chain replacements. The only problem is I just dont know where to start. I contacted BMW of North America and they gave me no info on this lawsuit, so I read the lawsuit myself and I know I qualify for partial reimbursement since im only at 80,050. I heard multiple things like to go to a independent mechanic, or to figure out this situation at a BMW dealership. So if anyone knows how I can get reimbursed, or even where to start with this situation please help!!!!

The N20/N26 class action settlement dictates that any new failure past Effective Date(some time in June 2021?) must be diagnosed by BMW dealer, or else there will be no reimbursement.

Once a BMW dealer confirms the failure is covered by the settlement, then the age + miles at the time of diagnosed failure will be used to figure out the cost sharing between owner and BMWNA.

In our Group F market, dealers are allowed to negotiate number of hours + hourly rate on this job. E.g. the going rate is around $6000 at our local dealer.

For 50%(e.g.) owner's cost, that amounts to $3000. There is no extra paperwork, as dealer gets approval from BMWNA for the job for $6000, but BMWNA pays 50%, and owner pays 50%.

There are indies that can do the same job for $3000(e.g.), but BMWNA does not reimburse any of that, so it is owner's out-of-pocket.

Then it is up to owner to decide which is the preferred route to go.

As far as warranty of work, I think my local dealer offers 2 years unlimited miles parts + labor on TC job, while some indies also have similar coverage.
