Auto Transmission Line?

Any idea why my automatic wouldn't have this port?

My dilemma now is whether or not a CP would be worth the money I'd be putting into it (~400 for the pipe and ~150 for install). I'd really hope that I would have some measurable or tangible difference in performance.

FYI, I just started running my JB4 on Map 2 since I finally found 94 octane last week.

Any input helps!
My car is similar to yours and I am replacing the charge pipe. From the information that I have gathered, if you have increased the boost with a tune then the question isn't IF your stock plastic charge pipe is going to break, it's WHEN it will break. They all break near the throttle body end. So even if there is no performance gain, the charge pipe should be replaced.

Concerning performance. I have been told and I believe that you will see a performance gain. Just look at the attached photo of the stock plastic charge pipe versus a metal charge pipe from Evolution Racewerks. (The photo doesn't show the silicone sleeve that connects the 2-piece ER kit.) The plastic pipe has an inside diameter that is smaller and varies in size including that nasty baffled area. All of these cause turbulence which means less efficiency. The ER pipe has a large smooth consistent inside surface for much better intake air flow.

Also the plastic pipe is going to naturally flex and bow out and in as the boost pressure goes up and down. The metal ER pipe is solid so the boost air delivery will be consistent without the inherent delay of that plastic pipe flexing. Hope this helps.

There hasn't been any proven gains of an aftermarket CP vs stock.

When I replaced my chargepipe throttle response was definitely better, and I felt the car was pulling a bit harder. I feel like the stock cp lets some boost out and the aftermarket metal cp doesn't.

Oh for sure, me too, I just interpreted another posters message as "performance gains" being hp or tq

Just out of curiousity, I'm pretty handy with work under the hood but im not an expert by no means. On scale of 1-10 on install of the CP, how hard is it? I saw a youtube video that he put it in with a couple jacks and most of the fitment was done over the engine?

Thanks

Is there a good way (online) to tell if my BMW has the plastic charge pipe which I assume it does? I have a 2015 F30 N55 (335i), all stock except M Sports package/suspension...don't have the tools to lift it nor do I want to (paranoid...love the idea of working on my car, but terrified of the small chance it would fall and crush me).

If it’s stock, then you have the plastic CP.

If you have any doubt, take this post in this thread from 2015 where someone thought it was a joke.

N55 charge pipe is known to have issues. There are higher stresses on this part than originally anticipated in the design causing them to separate. A metal charge pipe may hold up better. The B58 doesn't have this issue though the charge pipe is also plastic due to a better design.

It is, but it's lasted about 70,000 miles in stock form. I'd rather have BMW replace it under warranty/extended warranty if I don't have to pay for it.

I'm over 100,000 miles now and will be replacing it because I track the car a lot.

B58s have not been pushed like the N55 either due to tune limitations.

How good the new design? TBD.

And this is a N55 thread, so let's not get sidetracked.
There was a post showing that the rad and the engine are allowed to move together as they are mounted to each other on B58 and on N55 the rad is mounted to the chassis so it is stressed when the engine moves on its mount. This is why charge pipe failures occur even on stock cars. There are plenty of B58 cars with jb4 and high horsepower with no charge pipe issues. It just isn't a thing that people are replacing the charge pipe on the B58.

Stock is plastic. That means it will fail eventually, only a matter of time.

Best to upgrade before it breaks.

Would his fit the b48 (320i) engine?
