5 years ago today.....

...I got my first F30!

Seriously, where does the time go, 5 years!!

I have to give a big up to our long lost forum member F30AM for steering me away from a bog 320d to the amazing 330d lease deal at the time, some forum members will remember.

Still a great looking car, on delivery day after I'd added a few bits:

5 Years!? I remember following this while I waited to pick up my 430d, that'll be 5 years next month. Makes you realise how long you've spent trawling these forums when you're supposed to be at work

My current 340i is my third F30... Started with a 320d Sport Manual in 2012, then a 330 MSport Auto and now this one...

You're working your way up the range, next will be an M3?

Well, it's an interesting thing, see...

I first got my 320 when I had to sell the GT3... Then, I was looking for something nice but manageable (cost-wise) after a change in circumstances (I'd always say to people that you never know what changes can happen and 99% of us are in that position where it could just all change one day)...

Anyway, back then, I stuck a few grand down and got a PCP for £350/m on the 320 Sport... The car fundamentally suited me but then I got the urge to tinker with the spec tool and see what deals were there to upgrade to the 330 and the same happened to the 340...

Now the 340 is coming to the end of its PCP, though, I think my 3-er days are coming to an end again (I say again, as I was a returning BMW customer, having had an E30 M3 back in the day)... We are seeing that cars, in general, are becoming more costly to buy/own these days (when compared to a few years ago)... The various finance deals are not as attractive as they once were, prices are going up, etc etc... I cannot see me in a G20 unless there are some changes (maybe, we'll see)... I don't see being in a G20 at the mo', certainly...

As for the M3, well, sadly, it makes no financial sense whatsoever for me...

5 years ago today I was in my red 328i (still think MR was a seriously underrated colour). Unfortunately by then the gearbox had already been replaced and the gremlins had taken possession of all the mechanical components. That said, even if it had been working ok, the forum was full of stories of the big diesels eclipsing whatever the F3x petrols could offer

Speaking of older/ex forum members, one that particularly sticks out for me was "Jus'D'Orange" (although I suspect he was an alter ego of one of the regulars at the time.)..

No relevance whatsoever to the thread, just being random...

I kept my 328i 6.5 years.
I was happy with the car, the colour and the massive spec.

Do you remember F30AM’s fuss over his baggy front seats ?
The general uproar when members discovered that their seat bases had surface rust ! Including mine.
I had a look at the seat bases before I sold the car when it was 7 years and 2 months old. The seat bases showed no more rust than 6.5 years earlier.
Happy memories.

Five years ago I think I was taking delivery of my 325d company car; didn't last long as changed jobs and moved to a 328i in summer of 2015.

5 years ago - driving a Golf GTi PP, Merc E class 220d estate and a VW Passat estate (merc was mine, Golf was bought for the mrs but she didnt like it so I kept it for me, and the Passat was a company car as they were sick of my mileage claims!), living in Chesterfield, working in Hemel, paying for one kid at uni and one who had just started work in Hemel so I was paying for her flat... married, different job, different life.....

I'd give up all that I have today for one of those things to be how it was. Remember that when you are wishing you had a better car, a bigger bank balance, more holidays....

Also a SUV wanker but at least powered by the correct fuel!!

Well said and thought provoking. Money and toys are insubstantial, much as we all enjoy them. People matter.

Was it really only 5 years ago that you got your first F30 teaston? I thought you had it before I got the 335d, which was December 2013.

Between an F31 335d, F30 330e, and the F82 M4 I've had a pretty good spread of fuel types, body styles, performance levels, driven axles, cylinder counts... only missing a manual!

The 3 cars have now done just 200k miles between them now, and actually, very little has gone wrong with any of them, and none has failed to start or left it's driver stranded!

Yes definitely, as you can see it's a 14 plate. I did orders it before December though, they took ages to fulfil those special lease deal orders!

We had a XF 3.0d Portfolio spec in a bight vibrant metallic blue. An absolutely stunning car. Looked amazing on the 20" alloys.

That was a great car. So nice to drive, plenty of performance from a great engine. Loved how the air vents rotated.

And surprisingly for a JLR product in 60k miles nothing, absolutely nothing went wrong!

Mine was on 60,000 when it went and likewise, no issues at all. Well, the sat nav was uselesss, but it wasn't broken as such.

It drove amazing, silky smooth, quick, and in S guise with adaptive dampers went through corners flatter and faster than my 440i.

And with big wheels and body kit, it was a proper head turner. Wife always laughed at how many middle aged men turned to watch as we went by.....

Shame they watered them down to go more mass market with the next generation XF.
