Anyone not happy with their 440i?
Hey all. I picked up a slightly used 440i(3K miles) about 3 weeks ago. And I think I am already bored with the car. I feel very disconnected from the car and it feels boring to me. The car is very comfterable and fantastic on the highway but is just missing that "it" factor and fun. For reference I had a 330CI for 10 years that I loved and enjoyed, then had a 987.2 Cayman S for 4 years that was phenomenal. Both of which where manual, now I have a 8AT.
I feel like I have made a mistake and gotten use to a little more hardcore of a car. Any mods someone can suggest that made the car more fund. I just ordered a exhaust and resonator delete. Just sharing my thoughts. Options on the car Last edited by RedBarron; 03-11-2019 at 09:59 PM.. |

Did you explore getting MPPSK (factory tune plus exhaust)?

Yes. Add this. Your car will feel and sound very different with the power and sound kit.

Gonna need more than that to give the car a personality.

Another vote for the MPPSK. Gives the car a different character altogether
You're stuck with numb steering - as with every modern car with EPS. There's a plethora of aftermarket suspension options of course, all depending on what you want to achieve ( BTW, mppsk is only available to install on pre-July 18 production)

This is why I got RWD+6MT. Even in stock form it was fun and engaging to drive. Mods (I did coilovers and exhaust) were icing on the cake, but they didn't suddenly turn on the party switch.
It also helps to drive like a dick from time to time take those highway on ramps like you're on the Nürburgring. All autos feel pretty much the same to me. Power doesn't fix it. It's a cruiser, not a fun driver. |

These cars wake up with added boost... definitely want a tune if your goal is fun. Since you have a warranty that you don't want to void, I'd second MPPSK. Or return the car and get something more hardcore like an M2 or Cayman. The 440i is meant to be a comfy, fun DD.

OP, you've already ordered exhaust and non-resonated mid-pipe, makes it sound better but if you want to move better you'll have to go FBO, wheels/tires, suspension, LSD.
Catted/Catless downipe, FMIC, Charge Pipe, GFB DV+ diverter valve, BM3 or MHD Flash tune. Lighter wheels/tires incl. wider fronts and Michelin pilot sport 4S or Continental SportContact 6, tires, suspension mods, LSD. That's not exactly a small "can of worms", it'll improve the car substantially but when you're talking about a Porsche Cayman, that's a different level. If doing all of that seems a bit much, i'd cut your losses now and get a different vehicle. Last edited by alohasurftoad; 03-12-2019 at 09:17 AM.. |

This is a very capable sporty luxury coupe, OP, but I'm not surprised after your Cayman S, which is more of a drivers car and has a significantly different driver experience. I hate to say it, because I really did love my 340i which was specced just like yours (Track Handling Package etc), but I only kept it for 3 months before getting an M3. I did not bother to get the MPPSK because it was more than just the power I wanted and the M3 delivered on what power alone couldn't give me. I've since replaced that with an M3 CS and now I'm drooling over 981 Cayman S's, so take that as you will. Makes me wonder if we are ever truly satisfied! As for mods, the exhaust will help a lot, perhaps suspension and definitely an LSD. Camber plates, charge pipe and a tune will really wake this car up as well.

I think coming from a Cayman ruined you.... this car is not in the same universe as a little mid engine go kart.
Lucky for me I still have my mid engine go kart(NSX) to get my fun drive in once in awhile, but I love the way my 428i drives and how comfortable and smooth it is... I also like that it's the 4 banger twin turbo, seems like you can actually wind out the car without fear of getting speeding tickets everywhere I go. It seems the early Caymans are now under $20k for some nice looking examples.... maybe you can fit one in your budget to get your fun fix. I've actually been lusting over the Cayman GT4 lately and have been contemplating selling my NSX someday to get me one Sounds like you got a pretty good deal I would assume since it was "used" with such low miles, so you can probably sale it without taking too much of a hit I would hope if you truly want to get out of it. Good luck! Last edited by SoCal_NSX; 03-12-2019 at 04:41 PM.. |

I drive my F22 every chance I get, the wife gets the F36, lol. The 2-series just brings back memories of my E46 days, although it's only the 230i; it still feels much more connected and toss-able than the 4-series.

It's difficult to overcome preferences. If Porsche is the benchmark, then it will always be the benchmark.
440i steering is OK in my opinion. My 2017 440i GC has VSS and in sport mode it can a bit stiff with less than perfect feedback. MPPSK and great coilovers will transform your car. It sounds like you made up your mind. Good luck! |
