Looking for some advice with the DAB settings.

I like to use DAB for my Journey to and from work. I set out at a stupid hour most days and just like the simplicity of this. When I leave the office (often 11-12 hours later) I just want to get in the car and drive so again the DAB is simple.

On longer journeys I tend to use a hard drive with my music collection split into artist and album folders which works well for me.

My issue with the DAB on the BMW to date is that the image from the radio station is very intermittent and blurred.

I am not sure if I pressed the setting to re-size or enlarge the image (the option seems to be greyed out so not sure whether it did do anything or not TBH), when I was first tinkering, but what I get for the odd few stations (that I listen to anyway) is intermittent images which look reasonable but then sometimes for no apparent reason expand in the box to a nasty blocky image that looks shite and looses half of the actual image due to the size in the box

In previous cars (VAG group) I am sure that is some you could manage the images and upload them via USB to the car but as I understand the BMW relies on the stations broadcasting the image.

Album art is perfect from the hard drive.

Just wanted to get others experiences and see if there is anything I have missed that may help with this. Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.

As a fellow shadower I'll have the same I Drive set up as you so thought I'd share my experience.

I tend to listen to Radios 2 / 4 / 5 and find that for probably 95%+ of the time the image is the right one but occasionally it goes to a low res version. I've always assumed that this is something to do with the signal strength but it doesn't impact the quality of the sound which is all or nothing - and luckily for me virtually never nothing despite what some people say on here about DAB.

I think the images you get with the Online Entertainment from Deezer and from my Ipod through USB are better quality than the "good" radio ones though.

Unfortunately I'm not sure there's much you can do about any of this.

I've never ever had an image of the DAB radio station show on my screen, just a naff grey picture of the genre of station (Pop music, News etc). Have I missed a setting somewhere?

My regular stations would be either Radio 1 Xtra or one of the KISS Stations. Radio 1 and 1 Xtra have an image most of the time but it does the think flitting between a half decent image and a low res blocky but larger image that looks crap.

For the KISS stations all I get is the standard grey box with "pop" if I remember correctly.

Maybe it is related to signal and I guess time will tell when I do some longer journeys if the KISS image does appear in some locations.

Just a shame we cant manage the images like the VW system.

I am going to have a dabble with TuneIn Radio (just downloaded the App on the phone) to see how well (or not) that works in the car.

Mine at hit and miss - only on certain stations in my area and even those have mixed results.

On some stations I see the grey picture as you are suggesting.

I'm really surprised that in a new Shadow Edition you don't see them. I don't think it's a setting but not all stations have them - do you get nothing for the BBC channels?

Nope, not a sausage. X3 before was the same.

As a above, I had the images initially years ago then all of a sudden they disappeared. I’ve had several cars since all different versions of idrive, but still nothing

Mine is very intermittent with the DAB images.

Personally it doesn't bother me as 99% of the time I leave the screen on map and use HUD for the radio.

I get the DAB images too. Frustrates me though as the whole idea of DAB is that it will give you station info such as programme thats on and current song playing. The problem with the BMW display is they have made the image so fecking big, it means the info at the bottom is cut off and it doesnt scroll. If you want to know what song is playing, you have to go to the main media page. But the listing only appears for a handful of seconds before going to the large station image (or station type if no image is available). I know what fecking channel I'm on and dont care for a fecking large image; I want to know whats playing!!! My iDrive in my old E92 didnt have the problem as the DAB info auto scrolled. Form over function like some aspects of iDrive. Dont get me started on the trip and driving info displays in split screen....

The track info works better in Split Screen with DAB, I stumbled across this yesterday when messing around trying to get TUNEIN Radio working.

I took a couple of pics of what I am seeing in the car park at work this morning. This was just after the LOW RES image had switched over to the clearer image.

It seems that you need either a 4 LCI (the one I test drove last year had it) or a 3 Shadow to get this if you don't have it in your 3 LCI.

My car has it, so did my previous pre-lci. Mrs' 125d has it also so should be in any car with pronav. Not sure about business nav though.

Hmmmmm. In that case all I know is that my current car has it and my April 2014 car with Pro Nav didn't have it!

There doesn’t seem to be any pattern to it, my 2013 had it initially then following an update it didn’t, then my 2015 never had it and neither has my 2018, all pro-nav

I've only ever seen BBC station images. Not sure if any local or commercial stations have the images displayed.

Had a good rummage through all the DAB channels and now do seem to get the low res pics for the BBC channels. Nothing for any others though
