So each year i take a 6 hour trip upstate and the time is coming up again, Every year i take this trip after about 3-4 hours i lose AC, You can hear the blower still blowing full speed but there's no air at all blowing out of the vents, just a tiny bit of cold, If i stop at a rest stop for like 15-20 minutes with the car off and then start it again, it works fine for another few hours

In another post someone mentioned something on a different BMW that the sensor by the passenger side feet area needs foam added or something but not sure if that's the same for the F30

Thanks for any info! i am out of warranty so really dont want to take it to the dealer and spend thousands for an issue i only have once a year, for normal drives the AC works perfect and i never have an issue

I had the same issue crop up two weeks ago while driving to see family. It's a very common problem, but I don't know for how far into the model run. My car is 2016.

TSB 64-06-13 addresses this very issue. The dealer performs a firmware up date that fixes the problem.

After getting it done I've also noticed my A/C blows a bit colder too.

Classic symptoms of the evaporator freezing over; when you park it defrosts and starts working again. I believe the post above should solve your issue.

Yes, in hot and humid climate evaporator freezing is common to both E90 and F30.
Happens if the fan speed is low. On a long trip, setting the fan speed to high prevents the evaporator from freezing.

Or why not turn off off ac while driving for 10min or wtvr to thaw and back on to avoid stopping

Turning the temperature up a few degrees will cycle the compressor off more often, reducing the tendency for the coils to freeze.

That's what we did and only five minutes or so did the trick. No need to stop, but it did get a little warm and stuffy in the car with three people.

We kept it at 70 and still had the issue before the TSB. I didn't think that was all that cold. I wonder how high you have to leave it?

Higher than it's set at when it freezes. I've never had a freeze up, and I keep my temperature setting at 68F. However, I seldom drive more than a few miles, so even when the humidity is gosh awful it's never on long enough to freeze. I bet the firmware update reduces the duty cycle of the compressor to prevent it from happening.

I had this happen in a motel I worked at that had undersized AC units. People would check in, crank the AC to full, and on a humid day they'd freeze up within an hour or so. Sometimes the ice on the coils was an inch thick. We eventually cured it by doubling the BTU size of the air conditioners, but as a stop gap I rigged the existing units so that they couldn't be turned to lower than 72F. That kept the compressors from running constantly and almost eliminated the freezing.

Thanks guys for the info, I looked up the TSB and bought the part from my local BMW dealer and added it in so I shall see next weekend if this fixes the issue being im doing a 6 hour drive

You bought a part? For me the TSB was a software update. There were no parts installed.

He must mean the sensor clip, which is covered in a different TSB.

yes, in 1 TSB there's a clip you can put in place that fixes it also, we shall see, do you have TSB they did for you?

my friend just had his A/C in for service and they referenced "SI B64 06 13", his was a 2017 m240i and would stop blowing cold after a little while, but would be fine the next time he would drive just to act up again.

Hey buddy! I am actually in the same exact boat as you are. I took the car to bmw today and they did an update/software thing and it's supposed to prevent the issue of the evaporator or whatever it's called to freeze up. If you open up your hood when this issue happens, you will see 2 things become white- they become frozen. No idea what they are but you'll definitely notice it.

I understand that you are out of warranty. I am still in warranty so I didn't have any issues. What I would do is call a few dealerships near you and get a quote for it. It took 30 mins max and all it is, is a software/coding thing. Feel free to message me on IG @b1ackf30 if you have any more questions.

In the TSB its a part you can add too which i did so i'll see this weekend on a long trip if it works now

For mine, it wasn't shown as a code update but an actual software update. The invoice is at home, but it and the service manager referred to it as a update to resolve an compatibility issue with a sensor. I'll get the exact verbiage when I get home tonight.

Interesting there is also a separate TSB for a clip. That wasn't even mentioned at my visit a couple weeks ago.

Thanks! it looks like they can do one or the other, maybe the clip was the first way to fix it then they figured they can do it through software too

It's two different TSBs. The clip, which corrected the position of the temperature sensor, only applied to cars manufactured through September 2013, and didn't include the 4 series.

Sorry if this is a little off topic, but i am wondering what you are using (or if there is a way) to search all TSBs by VIN, model year, or some other information?
