2013 335i N55 rod bearing failure, need new engine
Anybody got any advice on what I can do.
Bought a 2013 335i with 40k kilometers and after driving 8k kilometres Bmw says i need a new engine because of a rattling noise caused by rod bearing failure. No warranty on the car |

Did you buy it from a BMW dealer? No warranty of any kind?
This could be expensive for you.

Yes, bought it from a bmw dealer but no warranty at all. Yeah it's very expensive wondering what I can do with the car. Don't really want to keep it even after replacing an engine.

It's not salable if the engine is shot. You will have to fix it in order to sell it (at a loss, no doubt). An unfortunate situation.

Did BMW provide more details? Was it connecting rod bearing failure? Small percentage of N55 engines in 2013 model year were affected by this rare problem. If the problem were reported during warranty, the engine would be replaced - no questions asked.
The caveat: during early phase as the connecting rod bearing fails, the sound is very faint and can be barely observed during idle conditions. Most drivers are unable to detect it. Even dealers are reluctant to diagnose it unless the vehicle owner insists. The oil diagnostic report will however show excessive metal shavings and that's when BMW engineers begin to work with the dealer. Call BMW Canada and try to build a case for some courtesy action. Not easy. |

It's very difficult to anticipate what BMW Canada may do. The good news: there is awareness about this problem. Adding extra patience is all one can do.

Yeah im certainly going to have to wait. I edited my previous reply, let me know if you have any thoughts on that. Also, do you think I should just sell the car after and buy a similar 335i with maybe higher km but with warranty? Thanks for your help!

N55 engine has been very reliable. But - sometimes it's just is what it is. Your vehicle was on the wrong side of reliability percentage.
I don't see any reason why a later model vehicle with N55 engine should not be considered. B58 engine however is a real gem. |

BMW Canada offered to cover 80% of the cost, still waiting for part to come and start installing.
Cars been sitting at dealer for two months now, anything I can do about that? |

That is why I sold my Audi and in BMW now. BMW corporate is better than the thieves at VAG from my experience. |
