Thanks for the reply.

Yes, the Advance Auto should have an OBD reader.

How would that help as the BimmerLink app isn't showing any error codes and I'm pretty sure that a standard OBD reader won't allow for registering the battery?

You need a tool, not a reader. A reader tells you what's wrong, a tool, like a Foxwell 510, can fix it. Since Pep Boys is known to register batteries they must have a tool to do it. Advance may, since they sell batteries the same as Pep Boys does.

Just FYI...I had local Pep Boys (in Calif) install and code/register factory spec AGM battery in my 2012 X3; $215 total cost. Very fair price if you don't want to mess with registration/coding yourself.

Pep boys is a good idea for this. Just cost me $360 at a German auto mechanic.

FWIW

I called my local Autozone asking about registration after stumbling on to this thread.

It appears that they too are able to handle the registration like Pep Boys.

The frustrations continue!

Advance Auto (where I bought the battery) doesn't have a tool that will do BMW registrations.

Pep Boys here in Austin doesn't have an OBD tool that will handle BMW registrations on a 2011 BMW 328i.

And Auto Zone also won't do 2011 BMW 328i battery replacements because they don't have the necessary registration tool.

Does anyone have confidence that a $120 Foxwell NT520 will succeed even as the BimmerLink app with Veepeak OBD Check BLE adapter did not?

Thanks in advance for ideating how I can get past this aggravation!

Why don't you just go to your local BMW indy? Mine charged a whopping $25 to register my new battery.

That's awesome.

I think this new generation is almost against calling a place, describing the problem, and asking for an estimate.

OMG and if you have to charge them, instagram blows up.

chiefneil Thanks for the suggestion. $25 is a lot better price than the original amounts I was quoted. And that was my next move if no one had a quick fix that could get my BimmerLink challenge behind me.

deviantspeed For the record, I am 52 and had already called the 3 recommended auto shops after my registration challenge not to mention 2 BMW dealerships and 1 indy repair shop initially which is when I learned that replacing the battery can run $450+. So, your salty comments don't square with the situation.

The first indy shop here in Austin, TX wanted $49.50 to register my battery.

The second indy shop was Terry Sayther Automotive and they certainly earn their 4.9 star Google rating. They were happy to do it free of charge immediately upon my stopping in. They were awesome and their free advice model and their garage are impressive.

As for the error when using BimmerLink, it appears my second battery wasn't coded to AGM after the BMW dealership installed a new one under warranty roughly 5 years ago (it was only one month after I bought the car CPO and it took some escalations to have it covered) and that was blocking the registration from happening properly. It had to be reset which Terry Sayther tech Matt easily handled with his full powered BMW OBD tool.

So, the drama is behind me no thanks to the BMW dealership tech who fell short years ago. :-(

Thanks to all who assisted. And happy holidays.

I'll be as salty as I want to be. New generation of BMW owners still holds true.

Note first sentence, I should retract it.

Glad you found a good shop! I think my indy had initially quoted my 30 mins labor over the phone, probably their shop minimum so it would’ve been around the same $50 quote you got. After the work they just presented me with a $25 bill though.

I've read this thread completely and I'm still lost. I can't even locate a compatible battery! 90 or 92 ah, 900 CCA . I'm shopping on line. I want to register it myself and have the Bimmerlink that should do it.
Advice???

My indy shop was unable to register the battery on my 2016 340i xDrive. It used both autologic and another tool.

The battery management area showed, and it showed the current state of charge of the battery...so I'm wondering whether maybe the car registers itself in newer models? I put in an identical battery...and want to save the money not going to the dealer unless I have to.

I will get this foxwell nt510 tool everyone's been talking about here...unless I learn it's not supporting the b58 or 2016s.

Are we sure 2016s need battery registration?

When i got my battery replaced just recently, my shop used the J-Box scanner, but those devices are super expensive, was real easy for them though..Love this Indie shop near me, cos i am friends with the mgr and he installed the new OEM 90ah batt and coded it for under $300..

A Foxwell can pay for itself the first time you use it. Mine did. Be sure to keep it in the car. If you get a code that limits the car while away from home you want to be able to clear it.

Battery

So if I change up the battery from stock, my Foxwell will allow me to register a new battery with different specs? Just want to make sure before I go out and bring one of those 60 lb beasts home.

Yes, but I'm not sure you have unlimited range...and I'm not sure that changing the battery size is such a good idea. I'd stay agm and 90 Ah just because our car is so electricity dependent and sensitive. The agm is probably needed if you use the auto start/stop... otherwise ymmv.

At least for my E93 335i and M2, not even ISTA+ allows the software to select and register a battery below 80ah, within its per-populated menu.

I'm guessing it requires programming to add a lower amperage battery.

I don't think it would be wise to go lower amperage. I am going for an 85Ah or 90 Ah. My F30 328d is 80Ah from BMW.

I agree, one should just stick with the same capacity, skip the coding and just register an OEM-spec battery exchange.

Just pointing out that the menu does not show a battery VO string below 80ah, regardless.

However, the M4 uses a lithium ion battery that rated at 69AH.. Go figure right :
