Actually, yellow bulbs will shine amberish out of a red housing. The problem is you lose about half the light output since the red housing filters out a lot of the visible light from an amber bulb. I did this before I switched over to the Euro blackline LCI tails. I had high output bulbs that were brighter than stock, but they simply were not bright enough to overcome the red lens.
