Question F31 Touring 320d potential purchase advice??

Hi,

Can anyone please advise on what I should look out for with regards to purchasing a 2013 f31 2.0d m sport with around 100k on the clock. Originally my plan was to purchase a e91 lci 325d touring but for a extra few k I thought the f31 is something worth considering, are there any gremlins/known issues with regards to the gearbox and engine engine with the 2.0d, I assume they ironed out the previous generations niggles with the 2 litre engine.

Any thoughts? thanks all

Is the gearbox manual or auto?

I've not heard of problems with the 2.0d at high mileages but there again most of us on here change cars too regularly to get that kind of mileage! I'm sure someone on here will be able to advise better.

I would want to make sure it's got a full service history at that mileage. However I think that kind of mileage at that age probably suggests a lot of motorway miles which stresses the mechanical parts less.

Thanks for the input. I'm pretty flexible with regards to gearbox choice, for ease I was thinking a auto, I'll be towing a trailer with dirtbikes most of the time so hopefully the 2.0d shouldn't struggle with that.

Most of the cars I've seen on autotrader have full bmw service history with 1 owner, most likely lease or reps cars.

Not sure if they are much cheaper but what about a f31 318d then get a tuning box. Still the same 2.0d engine just detuned.

Crgiant is a great place to buy and they source the best high milers... have quite a few F31 320D`s in and occasionally get very high spec cars in stock.

It cross my mind but I've heard mixed opinions on ex police motors due to them being driven hard throughout their life, people are less sympathetic when it's not their own car.

I did have a look at them but they seem pretty similar in price to the 2.0d, after scanning the autotrader classifieds I see for a extra 2k you can find buy a 328i with 60-70k on the clock, performance wise it's considerably better than the 2.0d, so something else to add to the list, the lower mileage and better engine seems like a no brainier for 2k extra.

Maybe the patrol cars like astras and Corsas
But the mway cars have a easy enough life I reckon

Or stick with a 320d, stick a tuning box on that and turn it into 325d power.

Personally having seen how they are driven I'd never touch an ex-Police car. Yes they are regularly serviced, but they are driven hard. I'm not a traffic god driving BMWs but I can tell you how the Astras are driven. They are spanked to within an inch of their lives. Last week I went from scraping ice of one to driving it on blues 17 miles across country in rush hour, not time for it to warm up or be sympathetic until warm. Because they are so woefully underpowered they have to be thrashed to make any progress. I've driven them across fields, over speed bumps at 50mph, bounced them off the rev limiter, I've had fights with people in them, driven down dirt tracks at 70 mph after hare coursers, you name it. Ours do 40-50,000 miles a year and they are hard miles.

And if that hasn't put you off I can tell you about the blood, shit and vomit that gets cleaned out of them on a regular basis!

I'm glad you posted this, thank you, it confirms my fears of ex police motors, I'll be swerving them.

If thats cash you have why not look at a new one? 13.5k is enough for a deposit and most of the payments on a 3 yr pcp.

Iv got a neighbour who's a retired traffic cop and he said never buy an ex traffic car! Apparently they can ideal for hours (due to the electronics etc.) and he even said three bmws idled for 8 hours once whilst they sorted out a motorway jumper!

For £12 - £13.5k you should be able to find a decent 320D mate , I have seen loads for that much on autotrader and EBay .

Don't buy a car win 100k miles you will have problems for sure , buy a year old one with less miles with FSH .

Good luck
