Just out of curiosity, what do you all think the all in cost is to source and rebuild an M2 block?

With 540wtq I'm hoping I don't have to find out someday, but you never know.
You'll be fine at 540wtq
You'd be fine at 600wtq if you move torque further into the rev range, and or not completely beat the hell out of the car, launching etc etc, roll into it etc.
Shit wedge performance m235i dct swapped made 700+ wtq and he ran many runs, no idea about it now, tho.
Ends up depending how well the tune is set up.
At the end of my engines life, I was at around 380whp/400wtq boost target 18psi (Daily driven on these settings for 2-3k miles)

It really does just depend on how serious you are with maintenance and your driving.

Given I beat the hell out of mine, I still never thought I would have seized mine after only putting 20k miles on it (acquired at 60k) (Full FBO, E40, MHD for 4–5k~)
Man that's unfortunate luck, no doubt the engine is stout enough to handle good power, having a rod bearing take out the engine is frustrating to say the least. It makes me nervous enough to switch mine out as I'm at 80k.
I think if mine goes, I'll hunt down an s55 and dct since the car is paid off and is my fun car, I drive it once a week so I can have it down if need be ha.
Very unfortunate.

Sounds like a fun build ! LSD conversion would be a must, couldn't stand the diff on my 435.

My current goal now is to buy a salvaged M2 or X4M40i F26, off an auction, part it out and hopefully just transfer all working engine components to my 435.

Wish me luck !

Make sure to clean out oil cooler and lines before new engine.

What are your plans, You going to sleeve the block?
My advice, go on spool street forums and have a word with some folks there. More "build" oriented there imo, or jump over to the f80 group, some people there have gone full build.

My ideal outcome would be to source an M2 or m40i F26 core, however this has proven to become extremely difficult to come across !

My other option is to rebuild another N55 running core, with a few upgraded or replaced internals and maybe a forged crank. I want to be confident with my next block.

I'm not very familiar with the n55 process however from my understanding is they can't be bored and at some stages can't be honed. Not entirely sure how accurate it is as I've never explored this as an option and was going to deal with when or if.

So much like b58, you'll be left with sleeves to run new pistons, the other thing is I've seen someone before upgrade pistons, that used oem rings. He was able to reuse his old rings carefully to not mix them up, and didn't have to do anything with the cylinder walls.

I'm hoping you get lucky and it's not the case and there's an easier solution. A spun bearing is recoverable, but the engine should be torn down to remove any metal shavings including oil cooler and lines etc etc. I'm very curious to see where this goes. I'm sorry for the misfortune but this can be pretty damn rewarding at the end of it.

They're cheap, tons of support and can get you high horsepower output.

Have decided to drop in a 16' m235i engine in! Not the best outcome but definitely within my budget, caught it at 50k miles, basically going to be a drop in play, a bit of coding might be needed for it to run properly, nonetheless I still intend to swap the oil pan for a s55 oil setup, baffle, pickup and secondary pump.

I do not want to go through this again!

Will keep this thread updated.

I was able to land the deal at $5700 shipped, luckily I'm able to do most of the labor myself, so this will save me a ton on the final total cost.

It's on the way now !

Oh wow ok. So not as bad as I thought it would be!
Sounds like a very reasonable deal, and finally someone who gets down with a wrench, hell ya! I love working on these things, built a full blown e36 track car in my garage, 2 m52s lol, I'm excited but not too excited to build this further

This is exciting. Are you doing rod bearings?
I'm debating if I want to mess with them or not, but I definitely have been eye balling the mmr sump. Mmr says they have tested it on track no issues

It's nice how simple these engines are when you get the wiring harness and Intake out of the way.

Awesome OP!

But you should check Car-part for engine deals (with a warranty)

https://www.car-part.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi

5K M2 engines all day.

As much as I'd like to upgrade the turbo while it's my grasp, the bill for the engine alone was pretty hefty so I'm left with a smaller budget now :

Definitely still on my radar this year.
