Considering an M3.. What do you think?

My good friend picked up a 2016 M4 last night which was very nice. It made me want to look for M3's again. I wanted an M3 about a year ago when I was in the market but couldn't find one so I picked up a 340. I have a 2018 340i xDrive that came with the MPPSK package. I've had the car for over a year now and have had it FBO Stage 2 tuned with BM3 for less then 1000 miles. Love the car but I'm still interested in the F80. Anyone made the switch from the modified B58? If so let me know your thoughts.

What's prompting the interest in M3: more horsepower, better handling, the idea of having an M vehicle?

Just the aesthetic of the M3, resale value down the road, and bc it's always been an interest of mine.

In that case, just get it and enjoy the ride. It's safe to say that very few car buying decisions are driven entirely by practical reasons.

My friend picked up an F80 recently and he said he hates how it sounds and how it farts. Also he hates how he has to spend $3k+ on the crankhub just to start playing the game. But it looks good and he plans to do a single turbo setup to improve the sound.

I personally wanted the AWD. As much as I like the M3, I'm not a fan of how it sounds or that it is only RWD. At least the F80

There's lots of appeal in owning a proper ///M car! Looks, performance, badge prestige, etc. While I prefer the 6MT + AWD setup of my 340i (I can't imagine 470+whp on just 2 wheels for a daily), the M3 is great minus the exhaust and crankhub. I'd say if you're dead set, wait 3-6 months for the used car market to settle back to normal prices. If you have another car, you could sell your 340 now for a pretty penny (25-35k+) and get an M3 for high 30's depending on mileage.

I just picked up a 2018 6MT 340 M performance, mid $30's with 28k miles.
M3's same year and mileage are easily $20k more, is the price difference worth jt to you? Do you track the car regularly?

The new 2 series is 150lbs more than the prior gen. Not great but the new 2 series is nearly 4 inches longer and 2.5 inches wider.

Also keep in mind that the new M240 curb weights being thrown around are for the XDrive. The M240 rwd will be about 150-170lbs lighter.

xDrive is typically 125lbs, at least for the F chassis. And yeah, I saw the 3,870 curb weight for the M240ix. I think my 340ix is 3,710. That's a heavy small car. What a shame BMW

An M3 would be great, but I bought my wife a 2020 M340i and that car is amazing! Haven’t modded it bc the wife won’t let me but if I could I’m sure 500whp would be easy.

Go drive one, if your into cars a 340 doesn't even come close... forget the power, when you start driving with a bit of get up and go you'll love it.

I was in the same boat as you but with the M4. Used ones were about 15k more than the 440i with the Msport Package already I picked for for 36k with 11k miles. Being that its still under warranty I simply put the JB Tune and AWE exhaust and I can hang with a lot of cars. Gave me more ability to do mods from the start.

Definitely an option. Factory installed is always nice though.

I personally think that even though the f80 offers many great things that the 340 doesn't. I just don't think that for how long you've had the 340 its worth the jump rn. You may or may not have heard but the M- Sport Package 340i is known as the "baby M3."
