It's a mid sized family estate with a good engine, nothing more.

The m240i is a smaller version with a slightly higher tuned version of the same engine, slightly more performance focused, but still a lot closer to a 340i than to a proper M car imo.

I think my MY13 335i coupe was a much nicer car, possibly the the best"compromise" car I've owned!

I've had a sit in a 2 series manual, not as bad as I thought and there is a 240i going through prep at the dealers at the moment. It has 19's running v low profile and the salesman says its not an ideal set up... but I'll have a drive when it becomes available. I got one of the mechanics to have a drive of mine to see what he thought of the gearbox and he reckons its the same as his M140i so it must just be me :-(
He thinks I may find the M240i a bit harsh on our roads and suggested an M4 is a surprisingly good machine, much as I've enjoyed M cars in the past I've always thought they are not ideal as a DD.
BMW are awash with cars at the moment, lots of 140i's about if that's what you want!

I've always thought one of the great strengths of an M-car is they can play when you're in the mood but do the daily driver bit when required as well. To some extent it obviously depends on how many miles you do and where you drive - I wouldn't choose a manual M4 for lots of city driving for example - but my old E46 M3 CS was used as a daily driver and over four and a half years and almost 70k miles it was fine.

I'd therefore say give the M4 a try and see what you think; however, good luck with finding a manual as they're almost all DCT!

I think the M4 is a brilliant daily driver! I'm much happier driving it every day than any other car I've had.

Certain road surfaces create a little more road noise, but otherwise I find it more refined at speed than my other BMWs. I can get around 30mpg on my run to the office, though it can drop below 20 on a blast.

As practical as any other standard car of same body shape.

It's a firm car, but no more than you'd expect or want from a high performance car.

If it's within your means I'd have a drive and see what you think.

Yep, I agree. I like my 440i MPPSK a lot but I don't love it. Its a nice looking GT, with a nice engine and exhaust, but its no sports car. Its better than the competition's offerings for certain, but its not a great car. Its let down by the steering, the suspension and its bulk/weight. My E36 325i was better to drive with a lot, lot less power - more agile, better steering, better suspension and smaller
I test drove the M140i before getting the 4 series. Fun but was too small for my needs, and a bit too unrefined tbh
