Dome light swap fail , coding required?
Picked up a dome light pulled from a 2015 428i off of eBay.
Plugged it into my 2013 328i expecting it to light up, but it did not. The only difference I can tell is mine has a plastic backing covering the circuit board. Everything else is identical, both are LED. All I was planning to do was to swap out the white LEDs for amber to get some classic ambience going on. So…it's not critical I make it work, but it's annoying. Thanks in advance! |

There is a difference. The plastic covered ones are for the frontside, and the one with the open circuit board is for the back. You can't switch out those, because there is a lot more going on with the front side, mainly controlling also the back side.
Also, there are differences which are not visible with the naked eye, the ambient lighting. There are 2 leds in there, white and orange (if you have ambient package). You can switch those through iDrive. Did you look for that? If you have no ambient package, there will be no leds at all as far as I have seen, so it's weird you only have the white one available. |

Thanks, must have been mislabeled on eBay.
I do have both amber and white LEDs for ambient lighting. Plan was to swap the main LEDs from white to amber or some other color just to be fun. Open the door and the whole car is illuminated amber. But this seems like a total pain in the ass. Back on my old S4 it was simple as swapping out a couple festoon bulbs. |
