17 year old ordered a Golf GTI, ended up with a Fiesta, now crashed!

LFC lad is taking his test in the next couple of weeks as he turned 17 a few weeks back so has just ordered himself a new Golf GTI PP for his first car and is now asking about where to insure it.

Only places I can think of off the top of my head are Adrian Flux and A Plan, any others?

We went with Adrian Flux for my boys first car which was a `06 Clio 1.2 , at around £1600 it was the cheapest we could get and some wouldnt even quote him due to his age so good luck with the GTi.

This year it was Admiral who were the most reasonable.

My lad has just passed his test and he bought a used fiesta zetec with a 1.2 engine. His insurance is £1573.00 with me as a named driver on 8000 miles per year.

He and and few of his mates are with More Than Smart Wheels and he has had to have a blackbox fitted. The app is really good though (I can keep an eye on him) and his speed, smoothness and usage.

The Golf GTI is a nice car, especially for his first

...cant help thinking though he may get stung on his insurance though.

He has a sponsorship deal with one of the big sports companies so reckons that’ll pay for it, I still think he’ll be shocked though!

Should be more explicit, he’s a football player although only at academy stage.

Jesus, he has a lot going against him! He'll get a quote, but it'll be astronomical on that type of car at that age with that occupation. Best hope is to speak to someone who can go directly to the underwriter, because most quotation systems will just chuck out a 'no way' (his passengers might be potential future football stars, so the occupation is as bad, if not worse than his age and experience) or will load it automatically into stratospheric prices. An underwriter who likes his/her big premiums will literally make up a price, but it'll likely be a competitive one.

Adrian Flux is probably a good call. Endsleigh Insurance used to be able to deal with underwriters directly, but I'm going back over 25 years since I had proper knowledge of car insurance. Basically, find a specialist broker who can make a few phone calls. This one isn't for an online quotation system

I hope it’s expensive enough to put him off. Novice drivers shouldn’t be able to drive anything above about 100 bhp in my view until they have had perhaps 2 years of experience.

In practice the insurance market does quite a good job of keeping unsuitable drivers out of fast cars. Just because he may be able to afford it doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do. If you have some kind of parental-type responsibility for him, can you persuade him to get lower-powered version?

I’m trying to convince him the A180 1.3 AMG line is the way forward.

I drove like a complete arse at that age. Admittedly in a Hillman imp then Mk2 Escort 1300. Would have killed myself in anything faster.

He really doesn't want to be in that, irrespective of money.

I had a Mk1 Golf GTI when I was 18. But it was insured in my mums name and me as a named driver. You could get away with those sorts of things back in the 80’s.

Got to be costing him £5-£6k I’d say, that’s if you can get an insurance company to take you on with that car at 17.

So he ordered the car and didn’t check first if he can actually even get insurance on it?

Insurance during mid-late teens through to 25+ is very uncoordinated, some conditions make no sense at all.

Endsleigh told me they could insure a Audi A3 I was looking at, but the value had to be 11k or greater (their valuation tool to confirm this..). 1 series.. sure no problem, ES and SE aren’t covered but M Sport is ok... was really annoyed with the nonsense being passed on.

Endsleigh for students (academy running some course parallel to the football?)
Adrian Flux - though they told me I needed previous experience driving ‘powerful cars’, same applies with RWD.

There’ll be a broker who’s willing to do it, with an excess of 3-5k and a yearly of 4-10K.

If money was no object I would’ve done what he is looking to do, I only held off until recently because no one would actually provide a quote with less than 2-3k excess and 4K annual, didn’t want to eat silly amounts out of my deposit money for a flat.

I’ll be honest I don’t think he’s that arsed, he says he’s budgeted about 3.5k for insurance.

Good angle on the student thing he’s still studying with the academy 3 times a week, cheers.

I think he’ll be lucky!

The most I ever paid for insurance was back in 1991 when I was 21 for a Astra GTE 16v. Cost me £1200, which was I lot of bloody money back then! Especially when the car was about 2 years old and worth about £5k!!

I paid similar for my Renault 19 16v in the late 90s, blew a huge chunk of my student loan on car insurance

Such a shame he’s getting a brand new car for his first! Having a crappy old shed for your first car is a right of passage that all youngsters should experience!

What on earth does a kid need a brand new Golf GTI for!?

Having a crappy old car is shat, a brand new blingy one is awesome.

I’ll buy my kids new cars when they’re old enough, unless they play a lucrative sport professionally then they can buy their own.

Exactly! How can you properly appreciate your future cars if your first one isn’t shat?

And how can you enjoy your first car if you can’t bump it into things and not care?
