exhaust cleaning

Hey guys i bought a used exhaust and i wanted to make the tips look new. They have the carbon build up on the tips wondering what i could use to get rid of that and make it shiny again.

I haven't tried it yet, but I have heard and/or read that WD-40 works great at removing the buildup. If you have that much buildup though you probably also have some level of pitting in the chrome.

1. Clean with soap/water
2. Wipe down with IPA
3. Metal polish of your choice - I've had good results with Borla - with fine bronze wool pads
4. Rinse with water, dry

Borla 21461 Exhaust Cleaner and Polish - 8 oz. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002OEVNBK..._k68VvbJ0X9B19

Isopropyl alcohol. This is optional, but it cleans all the crap off the exhaust that the soap and water may not get. Minimizes chance of scratches - or so I tell myself.

You can also try "Nevr dull", I use this also by my motorbike for the chrome parts. Nearly no abrasive and good to work with.

Like everyone has said, you need a metal polish. A small can of Mother's metal polish from Walmart works pretty well. Put a small amount of metal polish on a quality paper towel or on a cheap towel and rub the stains off. You don't need to put a lot of force into it. People have also suggested using a fine wool with the metal polish, but mine were never that dirty. I just fold up a Bounty kitchen paper towel (it's somewhat abrasive) and do a few wipes, then shine with a clean towel and throw the paper towel in the trash. The chrome tips on the 428 hardly get stains, but the non-chrome tips on my E92 335 used to get black stains very fast. I still used the same method.

I use Autosol metal polish and 0000 steel wool, keeps the chrome nice and shiny and removes the carbon soot on the exhaust pipes.

I use Wenol red # 360376 for heavy tarnished chrome , stainless steel , aluminium, brass, and copper. Do not use on anodised aluminum. Then use Wenol blue # 9033500 for the final polish....leaves a water resistant spot resident coating.....using both colors is not necessary.
