Virgin BMW ordering advice

Have ordered cars in the past; never a BMW. Looking at a 2022 M240i xDrive. Have seen a lot of variance on % below MSRP; from 5-10%. Any advice on where to order or what's a reasonable offer for Fall 2021?
Thanks!

With the current hip shortage I would be surprised if you could order an M240i for under list price. Especially getting one of the first deliveries.

I've worked at a BMW dealership since 1976 and Dan is right-on. You'll be lucky to get a build spot at this point. And be prepared to be missing some standard equipment, too.

Buy used right now, you'll be happier and you'll get a car on the day you pay for it.

Build the car you want online and then send that configuration to your local dealers via email and you'll get your answer.

It would be impossible to find a used G42 since they haven't delivered any (IIRC, delivery starts in November 2021).

Used BMW prices are crazy right now. Lightly used, 2 year old models are almost going for original MSRP price.

I bought a 2022 X3 last month, used a 3rd party broker and was offered 6% off for in stock or incoming and 7% off ordered car. I was pleased with that since every dealer was quoting MSRP and not negotiating (metro Boston area).

So to OP, any discount today would be good, especially for the first delivery of a new model.

There are no deals currently on any new cars because of the chip shortage.

In my opinion the only way to save some money is to analyze what you receive on a trade-in. If you do your homework and really know the market don’t settle. I didn’t want to go ouch the hassle of selling privately but got lucky as I was offered $2k more at Carmax than my dealer offered on a trade-in.

UPDATE

Thanks much for the replies! I have been shopping around dealers (midwest); here's the best I'd been given (Oct 2022). The dealer email was worded non-optimally - but I was offered "$2000 for a cash deal, $500 for finance or lease". This was in addition to another discount I qualified for.

I still waiting for a local delivery to test drive first; but after reading about 5-10% off 2021 models on the forums I wanted to see how 2022 was matching up. My sense from the forums and my contacts with several dealers that if you get $1000-2000 off MSPR (~2-4%) you're doing very well.

I'm not in a huge hurry so not rushed to get this deal done, but if the test drive goes well and one of these dealers will give some MSRP relief I'll order and update here.

Interesting that they are offering a better discount on a cash deal than a financed deal - that's exactly backwards of what one would expect, given the fact that they make money on the financing (unless you bring your own of course).

If you have a dealer that you normally work w/you may get up to 4%. If you're out of area or state and call that same dealer you will get MSRP or MSRP+

If you are or were military check out this link you can get up to $3,200 depending on model, if you bring cash/your own financing.

https://www.bmwusa.com/special-offer...incentive.html

If there is a BMW UDE near you and YOU ATTEND, you will get a coupon for $1,000 off. If the dealer already gave you a % discount they most likely will only give you $500 off b/c BMW funds 1/2 of the discount and the dealer funds the other 1/2

https://ude.bmwusa.com

If you use BMW FS you can get loyalty of $750 but the military discount will drop to $500, in effect you loose >$2,000

If a member submit for BMW CCA discount. Varies by model/trim. Minimum membership is 3 years.

So best case is MSRP - Dealer Discount - Military Discount - 1/2 UDE Discount - BMW CCA discount.

Whatever you do make a decision b/c packages and options are dropping like flies and December allocation are released in ~ 2 weeks. Guessing all of the November allocations are gone already.

Update - order complete

Did pick a dealer; got $2000 off for cash and then another $750 (1.5%) off in deal. They have no allocation - but I'm first in line. Not in a hurry - hoping for the allocation and build to be complete in ~4 months. We'll see.

However, there was no ADM in this case even though other dealers were asking $10k over MSRP. Having a good relationship with BMW and your CA helps a lot. This is my 3rd M car, and my 8th bimmer in the past 7 years, but my first time ordering.

Small dealer?

That's almost unheard of.

Edit - scratch that, thought it was an M3.

Big dealer, large market (Los Angeles) big CA with lots of pull and priority for allocations.

Have members that have ordered vehicles had issues as to the value of their trades? If one is quoted a trade value and delivery of the new vehicle takes 3 to 4 months, have the dealers adjusted your trade value? If not, did they specify that vehicle has to be under a specific mileage and have no additional issues from the time of appraisal to the time of actual delivery of new vehicle?

Must be nice!

I'm drowning with M3 orders and praying BMW blesses me with a couple this Christmas.

Kel, My dealer did commit to a firm trade value upon taking my deposit (they did not even have an allocation at the time) that was decently above other dealers in my area. There was no limit on the number of miles, condition, etc. I'm out of state so they did not even look at my car, although I did buy it from them 26 months before placing my order. But, if something were to happen (ie: accident) I'm not sure how I'd deal with that so I'm keeping my mileage low when possible.

No other dealers I talked to were willing to lock in the trade value for an ordered car, much less at above market. I think this was their way of giving me a decent discount to MSRP as a returning (3rd car) customer.

The other nice thing about this is that while I'm making lease payments on my current car, the depreciation portion of the payment will just go right back in my pocket as it reduces the buyout of the car from BMWFS, creating more 'equity' in their fixed trade value.

Order update....

Placed an order at a dealer with no allocation the end of November 2021; apparently first in line. Got a call after Christmas that they received an allocation and placed the order; now have the order number to track production. About a week after order placed; still no production date or update.

Not in a huge hurry and ready for a wait. Hopefully not much longer than 4 months to build/deliver. We'll see....

That's unfortunate. My dealer has already had 3 delivered. Which dealer are you working with?

Have you reached out? I had wanted mine to stall for a bit, waiting for the VW buyback to go through. I changed a couple things while I waited then a couple weeks later I hadn't heard anything and wanted to add something else. Dealer had my VIN and it was almost out of the factory.

At Status 111 and 112 you should still be able to see the estimated week of production. At Status 150 it will give you the day. From that point on the slow wagon-train to the port and then the long boat ride. The process from plant to port-of-entry takes at least 3-weeks and that doesn't count Stop-Sale parts issues. That's for us on the East Coast. I have no idea how cars to the Mid-west get there from Mexico.
