Had to clean my e90 tips a lot due to the additional carbon production of direct injection so I was careful to clean them on this 340 every 1-2 weeks, wasn't good enough the right side is etched on the inner bottom already *sigh*

Not to make your OCD even worse but they won't wear evenly. Mine for instance opens the left flap only after warmup so the right looks worse.

Right, but cleaning both at least biweekly should mitigate permanent damage which is now taken place anyway... have to order some real stainless ones from BMS as the garbage we get from bmw is plated

The finish is pretty low quality on the OEM tips. I replaced my sport line tips less than a year ago - they get cleaned and degreased monthly, but the black finish has started to pit already.

An argument in favor an aftermarket exhaust I suppose?

Either that or swap them every 6 months so they are similarly stained. My tips on my M235 are black anyway so I don't really care.
