Low RPM Booming / Drone ?
Just got my 3rd F30 - had a 2013 N20 xDrive that I liked so much I replaced it with a 2016 6spd / rwd / M-Sport and just 'upgraded' to a 2017 340i xDrive. Nice, clean car with 20,000 miles, M-Sport / Tech pkg / Leather / etc. etc. The car is both beauty and beast but I notice one very annoying characteristic.
Applying gentle/mild throttle at 55-60 mph while in 8th gear with the engine spinning ~1200 rpm creates a loud, very un-BMW like exhaust/engine droning sound - like a big vacuum cleaner is running in front of the windshield - or like you're lugging the engine along at a too low RPM but without any vibrations. I can't believe the car is designed to sound like that. Is this typical, normal? There's also a faint knocking/clunking sound that seems to come from the front left when going over speed bumps like something is shifting about in the engine bay or suspension. Made me wonder if there's some connection? Something loose in the exhaust or intake system somewhere. Before I bring it into the dealer I wondered if anyone experiences this, if it's 'normal' or if I just need to keep my foot planted |

ASD. Either code it out or unplug the module in the trunk.

Thanks for the input. I hope that's all it is. If you disconnect it, will it throw a code the dealer will question? Will it disconnect the HiFi sound (HK Amp)? If you know of any images posted somewhere I'd totally appreciate a link. Thanks again for the input G.NEWT I will search for more info on this.
UPDATE: Ordered the ASD bypass cable from Technic-PNP. I'll update this once received and installed. Last edited by B-Spater; 11-23-2018 at 11:25 PM.. Reason: Typos |

I would take it in to the dealer for the knocking/binding sound. Could be a strut mount or the sway bar bushings.. or a few other things. All of these are covered under the original factory warranty.

Thanks. A few days back it warmed up to 55 degrees Fahrenheit and the garage warmed up enough so I installed the harness. Completely satisfied. Drone is gone when cruising at 50-65 mph. Latest version is plug and play so it was quick and easy. I hear actual engine sound when pressing it. Around town it is quieter and I'm happy about that. Might even think about a performance exhaust .

Thanks for that. I absolutely will have those things checked. I bring my cars to an indy shop for oil changes and non-warranty work and will ask them to inspect it.

Just FYI, the reason why it sounds like you're lugging the engine is because you are. You shouldn't try to accelerate at that low of an rpm in that high of a gear. Downshift.
