When does the EGR operate?

Having read the thread involving the EGR cooler failures, I was wondering under what conditions the EGR operates. Is it more likely to operate under acceleration rather than cruising about with the cruise control on.

Both actually. It is designed to work especially in cruising conditions, since that is where the engine spends the most time. From my impression, it has some egr function even during harder loads.
